Peter GILDOW was born on July 30th, 1797 in Baltimore Co., MD or York Co., PA.  He was baptized Johann Peter Gildau at Steltz Union (Bethlehem) Church with Peter Gerber and his wife as sponsors. About 1820 Peter married Mary Jane RUHL in Pennsylvania.  Jane was born on May 27th 1800 in Pennsylvania.  She is probably related to the numerous RUHL's living around York County, PA - but this has not been proven.

The family lived for a number of years in Pennsylvania, where at least 3 of their children were born.  Sometime before 1830 Peter and his family moved to Guernsey Co., OH.  In 1840 Peter and 11 others were enumerated in his household in Seneca Twp., Guernsey Co., OH.  In the 1850 US Census, Peter was employed as an Inn Keeper in Wright Twp., Guernsey Co., OH.  He died in 1856 in Noble Co., OH and his body was interred in Kennonsburg Methodist Cemetery.  Jane died on August 27th, 1859 in Noble Co., OH and she was buried next to her husband in Kennonsburg Methodist Cemetery.

 

 

Children of Peter and Jane GILDOW:

Susanna  

She was born in 1822 in Pennsylvania.  Although not named, Susanna was probably one of the females aged 15 to 19 years of age living in Peter Gildow's household.  About 1845 she married Thomas West in Guernsey Co., OH.  Thomas was born in 1810 and died in 1855 in Noble Co., OH.  He was buried in the Kennonsburg Methodist Cemetery.  In July 1860, Susanna Gildow West appeared as the head of the household  for the 1860 Census in Wayne Twp., Noble Co., OH.  Her real estate was valued at $100 and her personal property also at $100.  She died in 1907 in Wayne Twp., Noble Co., OH and was buried next to her husband and parents at Kennonsburg Methodist Cemtery.  

Thomas West and Susanna Gildow had the following family:

1.   Rachel West - born 1846 in Guernsey Co., OH.
2.   Peter West - born in 1846 in Guernsey Co., OH.
3.   Elizabeth West - born in 1851 in Guernsey Co., OH.
4.   Julia A. West - born in 1854 in Noble Co., OH.

Daniel

Daniel was born about 1824 in Pennsylvania. He was probably the male aged 15 to 20 listed in Peter Gildow's household in the 1840 Census in Seneca Twp., Guernsey Co., OH.  on 28 February 1843, Daniel married Hannah Van Dyke in Guernsey Co., OH.  In the 1850 Census, Daniel and his wife Hannah were enumerated in Williamsburg in Beaver Twp., Guernsey Co., OH.  His occupation was listed as "wagoner."

Daniel Gildow and Hannah Van Dyke had the following family:

1.   George Gildow - born about 1843 in Guernsey Co., OH.
2.   Isaac Gildow - born about 1845 in Guernsey Co., OH.

Mary A.  

She was born about 1825 in Pennsylvania.  Mary was probably one of the females aged 15 to 19 years living in Peter Gildow's household.  She appeared on the 1850 Census in her father's household.  She married James Mendenhall on June 17th, 1856 in Noble Co., OH.

Sarah

Sarah was born about 1828 in Ohio.  She appeared on the 1850 Census in Peter Gildow's household.  She apparently never married.  For the 1870 Census she was living alone in Kennonsburg, Wayne Twp., Noble Co., OH.  Her occupation was listed as "housework".  Sarah's real estate was valued at $125 and her personal property at $100.  It was also noted that Sarah could not read or write.

Martin

Martin was born in 1830 in Ohio.  In 1850, a Martin Gildow appears on the Millwood Twp., Guernsey Co., OH Census records.  His occupation was listed as "teamster."  Around 1851, in Guernsey Co., OH, Martin married Jane ?, who was born in Ohio in 1829.  On the 1870 US Census, Martin appeared as the head of a household in Millwood Twp., Guernsey Co., OH and he worked as a "farm-laborer."  His real estate was valued at $4,000 and his personal property at $1,600.  This census also noted that both Martin and Jane were illiterate.

Martin Gildow and Jane ? had the following family:

1.   Jonah Gildow - born in 1852, Guernsey Co., OH.
2.   Rebecca Gildow - born in 1855 in Guernsey Co., OH.
3.   Joshua Gildow - born in 1859 in Guernsey Co., OH.
4.   Elizabeth Gildow - born in 1862 in Guernsey Co., OH.
5.   Thomas Gildow - born in 1864 in Guernsey Co., OH.

Cassandra

Cassa was born on 30 September 1832 in Ohio (though some records claim Pennsylvania.  She was probably one of the females aged 5 to 9 in Peter Gildow's household in the 1840 Census.  She was listed in the 1850 Census with her father's household.  On 29 March 1857 she married William STILTS (son of Henry H. and Judah STILTS) in Noble Co., OH.  After Cassandra's father died in 1856, William STILTS took over the tavern that he ran.  In the 1860 Census, William was named the head of the household and his occupation was listed as "tavern-keeper."  This census also noted that Cassandra could not read or write.  Cassandra died on October 18th, 1862 in Noble Co., OH and was buried in Kennonsburg Methodist Cemetery.  William never remarried and died on September 27th, 1892 and was buried next to his wife in Kennonsburg Methodist Cemetery.

William STILTS and Cassandra GILDOW had the following family: 

1.   James B. Stilts - born in September 1857 in Noble Co., OH
2.   John Charles STILTS - born 07 August 1859 in Noble Co., OH.

John   

He was born in 1835 in Ohio - a twin of his brother WilliamJohn was probably one of the males aged 5 to 9 living in Peter Gildow's household in the 1840 US Census.  He apeared in the 1850 Census with his father in Wright Twp., Guerney Co., OH.

William

He was the other twin born in 1835 in Ohio.  William was probably one of the males aged 5 to 9 years lving in Peter Gildow's household.  He also appeared in the 1850 US Census in Wright Twp., Guernsey Co., OH.

Adam W.

Adam was born about 1836 in Ohio.  On October 30th, 1856 in Noble Co., OH, he married Sarah BrownriggSarah was born in 1839 and died in 1913 in Sharon Twp., Noble Co., OH.  

Adam W. Gildow and Sarah Brownrigg had the following family:

1.   John B. Gildow - born 15 July 1857 in Olive Twp., Noble Co., OH.

George 

He was born in Ohio about 1838.  George was probably one of the males under age 4 listed in the household of Peter Gildow.  He appeared with his father on both the 1850 Census in Wright Twp., Guernsey Co., OH and 1860 Census in Wayne Twp., Noble Co., OH.  On March 12th, 1863 he married Mary E. Winet in Noble Co., OH.  She was born about 1840 in New Jersey.  Mary was listed as the head of a household in the 1870 Census in Wayne Twp., Noble Co., OH.  George's whereabouts are unknown, or even if he was deceased or living.

George Gildow and Mary Winet had the following family:

1.   John W. Gildow - born in 1864 in Noble Co., OH.
2.   Martin Gildow - born in 1866 in Noble Co., OH.

Maria

She was born in 1842 in Guernsey Co., OH.  She appeared on the 1850 Census in Peter Gildow's household.  She married John A. Mendenhall (son of James Mendenhall) on 05 May 1864 in Noble Co., OH.
