 1.  Edward BATE[S] was baptized on November 23rd, 1606 at the Parish
Church in Aston Clinton in Buckinghamshire, England.1  He was the son of William BATE and Margery PHILLIPS, and was probably born there shortly before his baptism.  Edward died on March 25th, 1686 in Weymouth, Suffolk Co., MA and buried at Burying Hill in Weymouth.2

Edward married Susanna PUTNAM on 26 January 1631/32  in Drayton Beauchamp, Buckinghamshire.3  She was the daughter of Richard PUTNAM and Sarah BROWN, christened in Tring, Hertfordshire, England on January 28th, 1609/10.4  Susanna's exact date of death is unknown, but it must have occurred after her husband's will was probated in July 1686.

They had the following Children:


(Exact birth-order is unknown, as not all birth-dates are known.  This is my interpretation of the known facts and my own opinions)

 

  1. Daughter Bates was stillborn in Drayton Beauchamp, Buckinghamshire, England.  She was buried on November 21st, 1632 
    in Drayton Beauchamp.5

  2. (2) Susanna Bates was christened on 22 January 1633/34 in Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England.6  She married 1) Nathaniel Blanchard, son of Thomas Blanchard, on December 16th, 1658 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., MA.7  Nathaniel was born about 1636 in England.8  He died on August 27th, 1676 in Weymouth.9  Susanna married 2) Thomas Bass on November 30th, 1680 in Braintree, Suffolk Co., MA.10

  3. John Bates was christened on 14 February 1635/36 in Aston Clinton.11  He died in 1716.12  He should not be confused with the John Bates, son of Edward, baptized in Boston on 11 January 1641/42 and later married Mary Farwell.  No marriage for this John Bates found.13

  4. Prudence Bates was probably born in 1638 or 1639 in Weymouth and buried on 11 June 1639 in Weymouth.14 


  5. (3) Increase BATES was born in Weymouth on 28 December 1641.  He died on February 20th, 1717/18 in Weymouth.15

  6. (4) Mary Bates was born about 1644 in Weymouth.16   She died on October 22nd, 1683 in Weymouth.17  She married John Rogers, Jr., son of Deacon John Rogers on 08 January 1661/62 in Weymouth.18  John was born in 1639 in Weymouth and died there on 28 February 1709/10.19

  7. Jehoshabeth Bates was born about 1647 in Weymouth.  She was called "impotent" [weak] in her father's will.  She never married and her date of death is unknown.20

  8. (5) Anna Bates was born about 1650 in Weymouth.21  She married James Stewart/Stuart about 1668 in Weymouth.22

  9. (6) Edward Bates, Jr. was born on 10 December 1655 in Weymouth and died there on 21 August 1725.23  He married Elizabeth [?] in 1679 in Weymouth.  She died in Hingham, Plymouth Co., MA on 06 July 1748.24
