BATES Sources:
|

|
|
|
 | One small book has been published on the history of this family,
written by Samuel A. Bates in 1900, called: "The Genealogy of the
Descendants of Edward Bates of Weymouth, Mass." While a
good beginning resource for this family, it is badly outdated and unfortunately confuses Elder Edward
BATE[S] with another man
of the same name who lived in Boston.
|
 | The Bates Association published a
newsletter from about 1898 to the mid 1930's, called
the "Bates Bulletin." This contains some
updated information on Edward BATE[S] of Weymouth, as well as many other
BATES families. It also has some "current"
news items (current at time of publication) about family members as
well as obituaries and miscellaneous other information.
|
 | An Article entitled "The
English Origin of Macuth1 (or Matthew) Pratt and Edward1
Bates of Weymouth, Massachusetts" by Frederick J. Nicholson
was published in two parts of the 1990 volume of The American
Genealogist (Nos. 1 and 2). This excellent article shows
the interrelationship between the PRATT and BATES
families in Aston-Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England and proves the
origins of Edward BATE[S] of Weymouth.

They also have an excellent map collection to browse
through.

|
Genealogy.com: Another commercial site with quite a
bit of information on the "How-To" of Genealogy. It is
affiliated with Family Tree Maker Software. They provide one free
database a day, the others are available only by subscription.
