Origins and Migrations of the Babcock Family:
The Babcock family was among the first settlers of
Westerly, Rhode Island. Several members of the family also lived in
nearby Stonington, Connecticut. Lodowick Babcock, Sr. left the
ancestral home and headed to Columbia Co., New York with his family.
Many members of the family still reside in the area.
My branch
migrated across the Great Lakes to Brantford, Ontario, Canada. This
is where the family story is a little fuzzy - tradition claims that
Lodowick Babcock, Jr., married as his third wife, Sarah Armstrong, an
Irish-Catholic. According to tradition this outraged the Babcock
family, who renounced him and his new wife. Only one child is known
to the couple, Alfred Perry Babcock, who traveled down south to America
and ended up in Chicago, where he met and married Ida May Winklepleck. Many members of this branch are still located in the
Chicago area, although a couple of their children moved out to California
in the mid 1920's. |
