Abner BATES

He
was the son of David
and Hannah (LINCOLN) BATES. He died
sometime after June 1810, when he last appeared on the
census as the head of a household. He may have
resided with one or more of his children over the
following years and his exact date of death is unknown.
He married first Sarah TOWER on 13 September 1770
in Weymouth. Sarah was the daughter of Peter
and Deborah (STOWELL) TOWER. She was born on
29 April 1750 in Hingham, Plymouth Co., MA. She
died sometime before November 1784, probably in
Cummington, MA. Exact date of death is unknown.
They had the following children:

- John
Bates was born in Weymouth, MA on April 2nd,
1773. He married Hephzebath Hill in
Cummington, MA on 30 August 1798.
- Abner BATES Jr.
was born on 07 January 1777 in Weymouth. He
married Mehitable WHITMAN on 27 May 1798 in
Cummington and died there on 02 November 1815.
- Hannah
Bates was born in Weymouth and baptized there at
the North Church on 15 January 1779. She
married Chester Lamb in Cummington on 28
December 1797 and died in May 1822 in Dresden,
Seneca Co., NY.
- Deborah
Bates was born in Weymouth and baptized at the
North Church there on 05 November 1780. She
married John Bird in Cummington on 20
September 1799.
- Rufus
Pratt Bates was born about 1782/3 possibly in
Weymouth or Cummington. No birth or baptismal
record has been found. He married Abigail
Bisbee in Plainfield, Hampshire Co., MA on 29
November 1804. It is not yet proven that Rufus
is a son of Abner and Sarah BATES, but
it seems probable.

BATES married secondly Hannah Norton in
Cummington on 04 November 1784. Hannah was
born about 1750.

- Virtue
Bates was born on 26 October 1785 in Cummington,
Hampshire Co., MA. She married on June 24th,
1808 in Cummington, Jacob Snow Jr.
- James
Bates was born in Cummington on 02 August
1788. He was baptized at the First
Congregational Church on the Hill in Cummington on
12 October 1788. He died on 15 December 1806
in Cummington and was buried there in Streeter
Cemetery.
