Descendants of William West

Generation No. 1

1.  WILLIAM2 WEST  (UNKNOWN1) was born Abt. 1740 in Isle Of Wight, Virginia, and died March 1815 in Saint Helena Parish, Louisianna.  He married KEZIAH UNKNOWN.  She was born Abt. 1739 in Virginia.

Notes for WILLIAM WEST:

Notes per family trees rootsweb.com Ancestry Joshua Thomas Larkin

BIOGRAPHY: William West and his son Little Berry, arrived at the White Colony of

Bogue Chitto (Mississippi) and with permission, established a claim on the west side of the Bogue Chitto river, five miles below the "demarcation" or dividing line between the Mississippi Territory and Louisianna about 3/30/1798. Robert Carter also came in the early months of 1799 and staked out a claim to a land tract on the west side of the Bogue Chitto not far from where the river flowed into the Pearl.

BIOGRAPHY: William West was there about a year when Indians attacked and West retreated east. Claim jumpers (allegedly John Wooten) subsequently grabbed the land. There exists a copy of the letter that William's son, Little Berry, wrote on his behalf, trying to get the land back.

BIOGRAPHY: He went back to Louisianna and settled on St Catherine Creek, where he is is listed on the census of 25 May 1792 with son, Littleberry.

BIOGRAPHY: William left no will. Items on inventory at his death were: 1 tract of land, valued at $200; oxen; pots; Dutch oven; plows; beds; chair, bee gum; pewter basin; pewter plates; tin basin; 1 earthen mug; 1 piggin; saddle; bridle; steer hyde; calf hyde; etc.

BACKGROUND: Historical Note: Louisiana was first colonized by the French (1699-1769), then seized by Spain (1769-1803). Spain traded it back to France in 1803, who immediately sold it to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase (1803). That's why many of the notes in this genealogy refer to 'Spanish Louisiana' even though we today think of it as a French colony.

BACKGROUND: Geographical Note: The East Pearl River forms the easternmost border of lower Louisiana and Missippi (on the Gulf Coast). The Bogue Chito River flows from NW past Franklin, LA to meet the Pearl near Bush, LA. Best estimate is that the William West land was in the area of Bush, LA.

BIOGRAPHY: Note, some sources show Tabitha as the mother of Gadi West, et al. Others show Tabitha to be a 2nd wife for Littleberry West and that Eleanor Carter is the mother of Gadi et al. However, there is a record of the marriage to Eleanor being in 1826, thus she must be the second wife. Some sources show another 7 children for Littleberry with Eleanor. Likely, however, that these were step-children.

BIOGRAPHY: From Jim Allen:

Site of Littleberry's plantation on what is now NASA reservation where they test engines for space shots. This is assumed to be in

Rapides Par., LA where Littleberry died. [Most likely this site is Clebourne Range Military Reservation]

BIOGRAPHY: Natchez Court Records, Bk A, p. 167. Claim #351. 16 Apr. 1798.

Another Conveyance dated 27 Feb. 1804, 27 Mch. 1806, 13 Feb 1807 and original 1794. Also See: Littleberry West: Private Land Grants of MS, Gen. Ser. Admin., Jackson MS. #434, Docet #BLMD26 162; Patent 1122147.

CENSUS: See 1840, Rapides/Vernon Parish, LA for Littleberry and other related families (Cryer's, Spikes, etc.) Interesting to note that he did not have slaves.

CENSUS: There are a group of Wests on Image p. 4 of the 1860 Newton Co, TX census that are probably descendants of Littleberry: Berry West, age 68 being one.
