Stonleigh and half of Balterly, and thereby assumed the name of Stonleigh or
Stanley, and became the immediate founder of the Stanleys, a race associated

Lancashire, Eng.), a prominent figure in the later
stage of England's
Wars of the Roses.
Great-grandson of Sir
John Stanley (d. c. 1414), who created the fortunes
of the Stanley family,
Thomas Stanley began his career as a squire to
King Henry VI in 1454.
At the Battle of Blore Heath in August 1459,
Stanley, though close
at hand with a large force, did not join the royal
army, while his
brother William fought openly for York. In 1461 Stanley
was made chief justice
of Cheshire by Edward IV, but 10 years later he
sided with his
brother-in-law Warwick in the Lancastrian restoration.
Nevertheless, after
Warwick's fall, Edward IV made Stanley steward of his
household. About 1482
he married, as his second wife, Margaret Beaufort,
mother of the exiled
Henry Tudor (the future Henry VII).
Stanley was one of the
executors of Edward IV and was at first loyal to
the young king Edward
V. However, he acquiesced in Richard III's
accession and retained
his office as steward, avoiding entanglement in
the rebellion (1483)
on behalf of Henry Tudor in which his wife was
deeply involved. He
was made constable of England and was granted
possession of his
wife's estates with a charge to keep her safe in some
secret place at home.
Richard III could not well afford to quarrel with
so powerful a noble,
but he became suspicious when, early in 1485,
Stanley asked leave to
retire to his estates in Lancashire, and in the
summer Richard asked
Stanley to send his son Lord Strange to court as a
hostage. After Henry
Tudor had landed, Stanley made excuses for not
joining the King. On
the morning of Bosworth (August 22), when Richard
summoned Stanley to
join him, he received an evasive reply and thereupon
ordered Lord Strange
to be executed, although his order was neglected and
Strange escaped. After
the Battle of Bosworth Field, Stanley, who had
taken no part in the
fighting, placed the crown on Henry's head. Henry
VII confirmed him in
all his offices and created him earl of Derby. His
son Thomas succeeded
him as 2nd earl of Derby.

In Virginia, George
Hardy, of Isle of Wight County, took an active part in public affairs. He
served as a member of the House of Burgesses from 1641 to 1652. One of his
descendants, Honorable Samuel Hardy, who was educated at William and Mary
College and whose remains rest in Philadelphia with those of Innes, Tazwell,
Macon, Reade and other gallant and patriotic Virginians, was a contemporary of
George Washington. He served as a member of the House of Delegates in 1781, and
was a member of the continental Congress from 1783 to 1785. He was a lawyer and
his magnificent power, it is said, placed his at once in the front rank of
statesmen. He was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses from 1772 to

was disposed of and his children removed to the Carolinas and Georgia. This
branch of the family were zealous supporters of the Baptist Church. On the road
leading from Edgefield Court House to Hamburg, S.C., and located on the Hardy
estate, is an ancient Baptist Church, built by the Hardy brothers, which is

Note that this will
was written not later than 1794 because he refers to what ?portion to be given
at the age of eighteen?, in reference to those children who are not yet 18.
Since the age of Daniel Hardy has been pretty well established-having been born
in 1777- imprinted on his tombstone, then the latest the will could have been
written is 17 years plus 1777= 1794. This would probably been shortly after his
marriage to Fanny P. Ingram, as he alludes that her property should be returned
to her which he used-and this was a kind protection for her and her children to
preserve their inheritance and at the same time to have the services of a new
mother for his son Covington who probably had lost his own mother in childbirth
or shortly thereafter. I have some things different than the currently
published will on several sites I have seen on internet, specifically the page
number in Will Book A. Also Jude, not Jade, the name of the slave who was given
to John Hardy by his father in law,posthumously, in 1785 when Richard Williams
estate was further portioned out. In fact both Rose and Jude were given to him.
The name of John Hardy's stepson Thomas Ingram was left out on the other sites.
Also left out is the last name of Charles OLD and the ?s? on friends. Charles
Old was the brother of Phoebe Old, the wife of William Covington, a relation to
John Hardy?s mother Mary Covington. He must have come south with the Hardys. He
is also in the 1790 census Edgefield, along with Benjamin Hardy, John?s brother
I believe. I found Benjamin?s name by reading the lists by hand-I mean the
original on line. Note also, please that the children are specifically listed
in order of age, which was customary, either grouped into sexes or exactly as
they were born. Any child listed before Daniel was therefore born before 1777.
His birthdate is on his tombstone. The same 8 children are also named in their
uncle Daniel Williams's will 1803 and in their grandmother Agnes Allen
Williams's will 1825, in the same order:
