Thomas born February 14, 1844. He grew up on a farm near Flat Run in Northern Adams County. He joined the Civil War at the age of 19. He was a member of CO.E, 70th Regiment O.V.I., volunteered at Camp Homer in Adams County,Ohio at West Union, Ohio. He was with General Sherman at Siloh, April 6th and 7th, Cornith, Grand Junction Memphis, At Scottsburg, Alabama. He en-listed for three more years. He took part at Missionary Ridge, Kenesaw Mountain. The Alanta Campaign, in line 22 days of July.

Then with the 15th Corp under Logan through the historic March to the Sea. In the charge of Fort McAllister, on to Columbia, South Carolina, Goldsboro, North Carolina and the Grand Round-Up of Joe E. Johnston and at Durham Station, North Carolina, Grand Review, Washington D.C. to Little Rock, Arkansa and then home. He was honorably discharged from the service January 14, 1864 at Scottsboro, Alabama. Thomas then married Phoebe Roberds and started their family, in Highland & Adams County,Ohio.
