PERSIAN WAR or GULF WAR

Persian Gulf War or Gulf War, January 18, 1991 to February 28, 1991, armed conflict between Iraq and a coalition of 32 nations including the United States, Britain, Eqypt, France and Saudi Arabia originated with Iraq's invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990; Iraq then annexed Kuwait, which it had long claimed. Iraq pesident Saddam Hussein declared that the invasion was a response to overproductuin of oil in Kuwait, which had cost Iraq over $14 million when oil prices fell. Saddam Hussein also accused Kuwait of Illegally pumping oil from Iraq's Rumaila oil field.

The UN Security called for Iraq to withdraw and subsequently embargoed most trade with Iraq. On August 7, U.S. troops moved into Saudi Arabia to protect Saudi oli reserves. On November 29, the UN set January 15, 1991 as the deadline for a peaceful withdrawal Iraq troops from Kuwait. When Saddam Hussein refused to comply, Operation Desert Storm was launched on January 18, 1991, under the leadership of U.S. General Norman Schwarzkoph.

The U.S.-led coalition began a massive air war to destroy Iraq's forces and military and civil infrastrusture. Iraq called for terrist attacks against the coalition and launched Scud missiles at Israel {in an unsuccessful attempt to widen the war and break up the coalition} and at Saud Arabia. The main coalition forces invaded Kuwait and S Iraq on February 24, and , over the next four days, encircled and defeated the Iraq's and liberated Kuwait. When U.S. President George H. W. Bush declared a cease-fire February 28, most of the Iraq forces in Kuwait had either surrendered or fled.

Although the war was a decisive military victory for the coalition, Kuwait and Iraq suffered enormous property damage, and Saddam Hussein was not removed from power, in fact he was free to turn his attention to internal Shiite and Kurd revolts and moved to brutally surppress them. Coalition peace terms were agreed to by Iraq, but every effort was made to frustrate implementation of the terms, particulary UN weapons inspections. In 1993 the United States and France and Britain launched several air and cruise-missle strikes against Iraq in response to provocations, including an alleged Iraq to assassinate former President George H. B. Brush. An Iraqi troop buildup near Kuwait in 1994 led the United States to send forces to Kuwait and nearby areas. Continued resistance to weapons inspections led to bombing rai Iraq, and trade sanctions imposed on Iraq remained in place, albeit with an emphasis on military-related goods, until 2003 U.S.-British Invasion of Iraq, which was in many ways the final, delayed campaign of the Persian Gulf War

The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a tumultuos noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the Lord oh hosts mustereth the host of the battle. They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, the Lord, and the weapons of his ingignation, to destroy the whole land. Hoel ye; for the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. Isaiah 13-4,5,6

Flee out of the mist of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the Lord's vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence. Jeremiah 51:6
