216th Engineering Battalion based out of Felicity are pictured following their recent arrival at Camp Specicher near Tikrit, Iraq. PFC Drew Smalley, Pvt. Jay Edison, Spec. Two Highland County soldiers injured by shrapnel in Iraq; recovering in Germany. Two local soldiers are hospitalized in Germany after being injuried in Iraq this week. Army SPC Doug Couch and PVT. Jat Edison, both of the Hillsboro area, are being treated for shrapnael wounds at a U. S. hospital in Germany, according to family members. The two Ohio National Gurdsmen were injuried Sunday November 7, 2004, when a mortar attack ocurred at a check point where they were working. The two took cover behind a dump truck, which then took a direct mortar hit, family said.The attack took place near Samaria, where their engineering unit was widening a chek point. Both Soldiers are excepted to recover from their injuires
According to major who contacted the Couch family also told them that after Doug was hit, he continuted to run another 100 meters carring his 30 pounds M16 with a canister, he didn't realize he was hit. Jay's father Rick Edison said his son, didn't realized he was hit by shrapnel until 5 minutes later. Terry Dean was a support to the Couch family thur this, Terry Dean is also in the 216th Battalion he was injuried August 2004 lose of a leg. Both soldiers are member of the 216th Engineering Division of the Ohio National Guard, based in Felicity
