OLD DUTCH CEMETERY

Name:Old Dutch

Location: New Market Township

Remarks: On August 18, 1821, by indenture, in Original Book "B", page 89, Highland County Deed Records, George CALEY and Susanna his wife conveyed one acre and eight poles to "Andrew SHAFER", Jr. and George WILKIN, trustees of the a German Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Society in the said County of Highland ...for the benefit of said church to be applied for a church yard burying ground or to erect a church and for no other use whatsoever." In the same deed book, page 88, on August 28, 1821, by indenture, Philip WILKIN, Sen. and Anna his wife conveyed 120 poles to the same trustees for the same purpose.

Here in the year 1817 a log church was built in front of this cemetery by the German Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Society. Most of the old members were from the Shenandoh Valley in Viginia. In 1842 the Lutherans and German Reformed members decided to cease their joint worship in this church. The Lutherans built a church at Danville which was more acessible to the members of their faith. The German Reformed members established a church and grave yard on the Danville Pike called Mt. Zion. Refer to Mt. Zion Cemetery for further remarks.

Members of the WIKIN family state that Philip WILKIN, Senr. and Anna wife are buried there. Their monuments could not be identified. Years ago field stones were engraved with the name of the deceased, but those stones in this cemetery are illegible. The western or rear end of this cemetery is in Hamer Township. All stones copied. McBride (husband & wife) in 1954, reprinted 1990 by the Highland County Historical Society, Hillsboro,Ohio, Map No. 167.
