NEVIL & ELDRIDGE HISTORY

The earliest Neville that as been traced to is JOHN NEVIL, Sr. { March 6, 1808, Kentucky, February 1, 1867, Ohio}who married SARAH MARK, { April 16, 1799, Kentucky-March 20, 1888, Ohio} on June 24, 1830 in Fleming County,Kentucky. He was said to be Scottish while she was said to be Irish. Sarah was the sixth child of at least fifteen children of WILLIAM MARK {?-?} and SARAH SCHOFIELD
{?-?}. It has been said that John was born in Carter County,Kentucky, which did not exist until 1838. Since Carter County was not formed from Greenup County, it is probable that John was actually born in Greenup County, which was itself formed from Mason County in 1803. John and Sarah lived for a time in Carter County, where they homestead on Little Sinking or Sinkey Creek. It seems that this is where at least five of their children were born. They had the following children: WILLIAM {1831, Kentucky-1897, Ohio}; JOSEPH {1833}, Kentucky-1911, Washington}; REBECCA {December 20, 1835, Kentucky-October 15, 1915, Ohio}; SARAH {1837, Kentucky-1854, Ohio}; JOHN Jr. {December 11, 1838, Kentucky-December 28, 1906, Ohio}; and MARY ANN {August 6, 1841,Ohio-March 12, 1901, Ohio}. In the winter of 1841, they migrated across the Ohio River on the ice to Adams County,Ohio. John and Sarah were the first settlers of Peach Mountain, Ohio. They purchased several parcels of land from Nathaniel Massie, all on Peach Mountain. Here they built their "Big House" from logs off the farm. It was twenty feet wide by forty feet long, with two large rooms-running length of the house. This house was large enough to provide for newcomers to the community until they could build themselves. As sincere and commited Christians, they built their Big House to be used for church services intil a separate place of worship could be built. John was of the Old Christian Church and the first minister of the Gospel of Peach Mountain and the surrounding neighborhoods, serving the early settlers in all of their spiritual needs until his death. Today, the Peach Mountain or Nevil Cemetery is still accessible but much of this area is occupied by the GeneraL Electric Company Proving Grounds. "CONCLUSIONS"
It is somewhat of a mystery who John's parents were. The only Nevil in the 1820 census for Greenup, County, Kentucky, is WILLIAM NEVIL {before 1775-after 1820}. Although William had a male child of the right age to have been John, no proof has been found. A William Nevilis found on the Mason County, Kentucky, tax list dated August 25, 1800. So William probably resided a number of years in this region. There was a William Nevil who married PENELOPE WALLACE on December 16, 1813 in Adams County, Ohio. No connection has been established, descendant of a John, Joseph, or William since he named children with those names. In 1783, the Simon Kenton party travelled to Kentucky from Fauquier, County, Virginia, where the families of WILLIAM NEVILLE {ca. 1739-ca. 1810/1813 and WINIFRED OLDHAM {ca. 1738-ca. 1808} and JAMES NEVILLE {ca. 1741-1834} and
JOYCE "SARAH" BLACKBURN {1741-1840} had lived. WILLIAM NEVILLE {1766-?} who married
MILLY HOLZCLAW {?-?} doesn't fit because they had a daughter born the same month as JOHN NEVIL, Sr. WILLIAM NEVILLe {1767-?} who married MARANN McKINNEY {?-?} would have been the right age but they married after John's birth. Both of these Neville Families did settle in Kentucky around this time. None center around the eastern area where John Neville Sr. was born. WILLIAM NEVILLE {1872-1822} the son of JOSEPH NEVILL, Jr. {1733-1819} and AGNES NANCY BROWN{?-1816},would seem to be an appropiate fit especially as it has been shown that the WILLIAM {1732-1822} who married CASSANDRA DAVIS{1786-1855} is of a different family. Another possibility is that John, Sr. could have been the son of JOSEPH{?-?}, brother of William who married Milly Holzclaw. The Kenton party came to Limestone {now Maysville}, Mason County, Kentucky. Of course, this was a common migration route for many pioneers and William Nevill could have come from anywhere. It is also possible that William Nevil, who is thought to be John, Sr,'s father, could have been a SCOTTISH immigrant and not related to any of the above.
