Michael Hinkle Jr, "Micah" there is not much information for him. On May 19, 1802 he witnessed the signatures of Joseph and Alice Bryan to deed in Jefferson County, Kentucky by which they conveyed land in Rowan, County, North Carolina to their son-in-law Benjamin Hinkle, who was Michael Hinkle Sr's brother ,then of Rowan County, Niorth Carolina. That would be Michael Jr's Uncle. Micah is a Book in the Old Testament. This is what Michael went by sometimes like nickname He was killed in Adair County, Kentucky shortly after the close of Wao of 1812-1814 by a race horse, which he was riding, that bolted and ran under a low tree. After his death the widow, Nancy Haggins Hinkle, married a neighbor, Jacob Brumley. Jacob was not fond of the Hinkles and did not want the children. They returned to North Carolina or Tennessee taking the female and youngest son named William. The other two boys were left in Kentucky. No record of any Will nor any record of court settlements for Michael Jr's estate can be found. It is not known if he had anything of value at the time of his death. Through the generations property had been gained and each generation had a good education until the death of Michael Jr. There was no help for the boys left in Kentucky nor does it seem that any education was given to the two children taken with Nancy after her marriage to Jacob Brumley. There were at least three children from Nancy and Jacob: Isaac, Gus and John Brumley. I have a copy of the Marriage Bond of Nancy Haggins Hinkle and Jacob Brumley. 673-Michael Hinkle, Source: Henckel Genealogical Bulletine,Spring 1975, Volume 6, Number 1 - Page 230. The 1810 Census for Pulaski County,Kentucky, shows Michael Hinkle, 26 to 45 { b. 1765 - 1784 } his wife 16 - 26 { b 1784 - 1794 }, with three males and one female under ten years. Rev John Hinkle {b 1851 } living in Laurel County, Kentucky on May 2 1933 tro John Kerr Rose, " MIKE HINKLE RODE A RACE HORSE: it ran under a slanting tree killing him. {He} survived the War of 1812 and lived were at least four children: George, Anthony, William, and a daughter. She {the widow] married Jacob Brumley and went to North Carolina. He did not like the children so she gave them away except William and a daughter which she tooke with her to North Carolina. William was reared in North Carolina but returned to Clay County, Kentucky." The following records are compiled from this report, comfirmed by the census and other recordes, and information from Rita Samock, a descendant, of , Gary, Indiana. 673. Michael Hinkle b. ca. 1775, Rowan County, North Carolina, d 1812 - 1820 Adair or Pulaksi County, Kentucky. He married ca. 1800 Nancy Haggins: after his death she married Jacob Brumley { In Green County, Tennessee on 28 March 1816 Nancy Hinkle married Jacob Brumley. This may be the marriage of the widow, or it could be the daughter. 6731- George. He has not been identified. 6732 - William Hinkle, b., ca 1803 in North Carolina or Tennessee {the census varies} d. 1 March 1883, Clay County,Kentucky, married ca. 1825 Susan Treadwell 2nd marriage 30 Dec 1844, Clay County,Kentucky Anna Hacker 1822 - 1916. William appears in 1840 census of Knox County,Kentucky; in 1850, 1860, 1870 in Clay County,Kentucky. His age varies greatly. 6733 - daughter, name unknown, could be Nancy who married John Brumley in Greene County, Tennessee. It is possible Michael Hinkle had other children. It is not certain if the children were born in North Carolina, Tennessee, or Kentucky: the census reports vasry as well as the stories. The traditional stories, from two sources are close enough to identidy Anthony and William as sons of 673 Michael Hinkle. Please note that the stories were not entirely accurate. We have been able to place and construct the families from research in the Rose Papers, and many hours of camparing and eliminating. One must view all records on a family, and unfortunately one never knows when " all " records have been seen. Even then, we find surprises and discover that not all is as we first surmised. This example shows that we cannot accept any documentation in isolation. We thank Joan Tucker Flatt for sharing this petition { Aaron Tucker's Divorce Petition } with us and Juanita Hahn for information on a possible daughter. Michael 4 Hinkle 673 {Michael 3, Jacob Anthony 2, Rev. Anthony Jacob 1, Henckel} Michael's father Michael Hinkle, died when he was young, and Janet Spurgin was appointed on Friday, 5 August 1791 as guardian of Jennet Hinkle, Michael Hinkle, Anthony Hinkle, and John Hinkle, minor orphans of Michael Hinklr, deceased { Rowan County Minutes of the Courts of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Book 5:383 Rowan County Register 7, November 1992:1636 Thus, Micael as a minor on 5 August 1791. He apparently reached majority with in the next 10 years for, on 19 May 1802, Michael Hinkle witnessed a deed in Jefferson County,Kentucky. Michael Hinkle and his apparent family appear in the 1820 census of neighboring Pulski County,Kentucky. He was propably the Michael Hinkle who was killed in Adair County,Kentucky, shortly after the close of the War of 1812 - 1814 when a race horse he was riding bolted and ran under a low tree. Family traditions relates that Michae Hinkle's wife Nancy { Haggins } Tucker, and after his death Nancy married a neighbor Jacob Brumley and they returned to Rowan County, North Carolina. Nancy Hinkle maried Jacob Brumley on 28 Mar 1816 in Greene County,Tennessee { Greene County, Tenessee, Marriage Records }. Nancy's first husband was Aaron Tucker who petition for a divorce from Nancy in 1811 in Rowan County,North Carolina....We learn from this petition that Nancy married AaronTucker in 1800, during the next foor years they lived together and had two children, and she was pregnant with third child ca. 1804 when she left with Michael Hinkle for Kentucky. Thus, at least the two oldest children, and possibly three, were fathered by Aaron Tucker and not Michael Hinkle. We do not know why Aaron chose to wait for seven years before filing for the divorce, Joan Flatt, whose interest is in the Tucker Family, contributed the following thoughts. Jabob Brumley did not get along well with Nancy's two oldest sons. Nothing was said of the third child, so it could be that this child was Michael's. At any rate, the story goes that she decided to take the boys back to North Carolina to family. Whether the family she was taking them to was hers or perhaps to their own family, I don't know. The fact is Aaron Tucker shows up in Kentucky in 1816 { the same year Nancy married Brumley in Tennessee }, so since a lot of these stories contain a germ of fact, he could have been in Kentucky to retrieve his older children. Aaron's petition for divorce was denied. I don't know { yet } whether he re-petitioned at a later date in North Carolina or if he obtained a divorce in anothe state. He left North Carolina after 1813. He was "called up" for service in the War of 1812 from Rowan County in late 1814 or early 1815. He isn't on the 1815 Tax List. Although he appears on the Munster Rolls for the War of 1812, he isn't among the pay vouchers, so it is my theroy that he never knew he had been called for service and was already enroute to Kentucky. { Family Records of Joan Flatt } Family records indicate that Michael had three sons and one daughter. In 1810 these four children resided in his household in Pulaski County,Kentucky. The oldest son was indentified woth out proof, as George and as The George Hinkle born 13 November 1801 in Kentucky who served as a Mormon Colonel in Missouri { Hencxkel Genealogical Bulletine, 6:230 & 7:256 - 57. While it is doubtful that Michael Hinkle, son of Nancy {Haggins} Tucker. Rebecca is indentified as a sister of G.m Hinkle in her Mormon newspaper obituary and they both married in Wayne County, Indiana. Note that previous historians confused the married name of George's sister, Adams with, the possible maiden name of his wife.
