His name was recorded as Wade Gunter. Living in the household were head of household, John Gunter, his presumed wife, Harriet Gunter, their presumed children, Pendorah Gunter, Corah Gunter, Parthena Gunter, Lucy Gunter, John Gunter, Vergial Gunter, a presumed boarder Wade Gunter. Their dwelling was recorded as 4, and their family as 4 on page 1. NOTE: Normally census takers record the names of children after the head of household and the wife, if any. Children are typically recorded from eldest to youngest. When names are recorded out of "age order," it normally means those individuals are not children of the head of household. In this case, Vergial (sic) and Wade are listed out of age order with the other names under the head and wife. However, I believe Vergial is still a child of the head. He is listed in the household of John and Harriet Gunter in several censuses. All, except this one, in age order. Wade is a different story. This is the only census he appears as a child of John and Harriet Gunter. In addition, in the 1880 Census, a Wade Spires is married to Pandora; they also live next door to John and Harriet Gunter. Wade Spires in 1880 has the same date of birth as Wade Gunter in 1870. This leads me to believe that the census taker made a mistake when he listed Wade with the last name of Gunter. I believe his last name was actually Spires and he was a boarder, working on the farm.

According to the 1870 Census, John Gunter is 61 and Harriett Gunter is 52. John was a farmer with real estate valued at $300 and other property at $400. John and Harriett could not read or write. They were born in S.C. (I think the census taker entered the literacy elements in reverse -- marking those who COULD read rather than those who couldn't.) According to the 1870 Census, Wade Gunter was 19. He was born in South Carolina. He could not read or write. (I think the census taker entered the literacy elements in reverse -- marking those who COULD read rather than those who couldn't.).²

Wade H. Spires married Pandora Gunter, daughter of John W. Gunter and Harriet Poole. 1880 Census shows Wade and Pardora Spires as married. Their first child was born in 1875.¹ As of 1880, Wade H. Their dwelling was listed as number 89 and their family as number 92, on Water Ferry Road. The enumeration district was 26, listed on sheet 5A. Listed on the same census page was James A. and Docia Fulmer, dwelling number 83 and family number 86. Robert B. and Lessie Mae Fulmer were listed in dwelling number 84 and family number 87.

Their dwelling was number 97 and their family was number 99, listed in enumeration district 9, and on sheet 5A. The census taker recorded the road as Swansea and Wagener Road. Listed on the same census page was head of household Docia S. Fulmer with grandson Mattison Fulmer, dwelling number 94 and family number 96.

According to the 1930 Census, John and Hattie, both aged 43, owned their farm. They were first married at age 26. They could read and write, and they and their parents were born in S.C. John was a farmer in general farming, who was employed. He was not a veteran.⁴

Death
Hattie C. Fulmer died on 17 November 1960 at age 74.^6,7

In The State, dated 18 November 1960, the obituary for Hattie C. Fulmer reads as follows: Mrs. J.E. Fulmer, Swansea, Dies. Mrs. Hattie Cora Williams Fulmer, 74, Rt.2, Swansea, wife of John E. Fulmer, died at 6:45 yesterday evening at her residence after an illness of about three weeks. She was a lifelong resident of the Swansea section. Survivors include her husband, J.E. Fulmer; three daughters, Mrs. Reta Bodie and Mrs. Lucretia Shumpert, both of Pelion, and Mrs. Blanche Hutto, Swansea; one sister, Mrs. Lula W. Hutto, Pelion; 10 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon from King Grove Baptist Church, near Swansea, conducted by the Rev. D.L. Mattox, the Rev. Tom Hammonds, and the Rev. H.A. Wolfe. Interment will be in the churchyard. The body is at the residence, Rt. 2, Swansea.⁵
