His name was recorded as Franklin Sharpe. Living in the household were Franklin Sharpe, his presumed wife, Temperance Sharpe, their presumed child, George Sharpe. Their dwelling was recorded as number 1759, and their family as number 1709, on pages 230 and 231 (image 1 and 4 of 10 in Clark’s Mills group for Ancestry.com). The head of household next door was David Sharpe and his family, dwelling number 1758 and family number 1708. Frances Sharpe and his family, were next to David Sharpe, in dwelling number 1757 and family number 1707. The head of household also next to Franklin Sharpe was Elizabeth Popplo and her family, dwelling 1760 and family 1710, on page 231.

According to the 1860 Census, Franklin Sharpe was aged 25, and Temperance Sharpe was aged 21. Franklin was listed as a farmer with real property valued at $200 and other property of $200. They were born in S.C.2

Franklin Sharpe served in the military during the Civil War. According to the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, complied by the National Archives, the following is known about Franklin Sharp. Regiment: 20 South Carolina Infantry; Side: Confederate; Company: H; Soldier's rank in: private; Soldier's rank out: private. Also taken from the CWSS regarding the 20th Regiment of the S.C. Infantry: The 20th Infantry Regiment was organized at Orangeburg, South Carolina, during the winter of 1861-1862. Many of the men were recruited in Sumter, Orangeburg, and Calhoun counties. For some time the unit served in the Charleston area attached to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida….5,6

Franklin Sharpe died on 3 January 1862 at an unknown location at age 28 years. He was survived by his spouse, Temperance (?), at age 23 years, 11 months and 14 days, child, George Sharpe at age 3 years. The entry from Broken Fortunes reads: Franklin Sharp, pvt. Co. H 20th SC Infantry, died of disease 1-3-1862. No place of death listed.5

Franklin Sharpe's probate file was recorded under his name, at Lexington County Courthouse, Lexington, South Carolina. James J. Spires is listed as the administrator. The fact that there is an administrator and that no will is listed means Franklin Sharpe probably died intestate. His estate papers are indexed as Box 24, Parcel 7.7

J.D. Sharpe was placed in the position of head of household on the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, enumerated at Platt Springs, Lexington, SC, on 18 August 1860. His name was recorded as J.D. Sharpe. Living in the household were J.D. Sharpe, his presumed wife, Mahala Sharpe, their presumed child, Godfrey Sharpe, a person with unknown ties, Sarah Waters. Their dwelling was recorded as number 1746, and their family as number 1696, on page 228. (Found on image 2 of 3 in Platt Springs group for Ancestry.com. The following page shows no other J.D. Sharpe family members. Page 229 is found Vicinity of Beaver Pond group for Ancestry.com.) Next door to J.D. Sharpe was Eman’l Sharpe and his family, in dwelling 1745 and family number 1695. Before Eman’l was Rueben Sharpe and his family, in dwelling 1744 and family number 1694.

According to the 1860 Census, J.D. Sharpe was aged 21, and Mahala Sharpe was aged 28. J.D. was listed as a farmer with real property valued at $150 and other property of $100. They were born in S.C.4

Jefferson D. Sharp served in the military during the Civil War. According to the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, complied by the National Archives, Jefferson D. Sharp is recorded as the following:
Regiment: 20 South Carolina Infantry; Side: Confederate; Company: H; Soldier's rank in: private; Soldier's rank out: private. This is the same regiment in which his brother Franklin Sharp was recorded.

The following information is taken from the CWSS regarding the 20th Regiment of the S.C. Infantry: 20th Infantry Regiment was organized at Orangeburg, South Carolina, during the winter of 1861-1862. Many of the men were recruited in Sumter, Orangeburg, and Calhoun counties. For some time the unit served in the Charleston area attached to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. In the spring of 1864 it moved to Virginia and was assigned to General Kershaw's, Kennedy's, and Conner's Brigade. The 20th participated in the Battle of Cold Harbor, saw action in the Shenandoah Valley with Early, and ended the war in North Carolina. On Morris Island from July 10 to September 6, 1863, it lost 9 killed and 24 wounded. During this time on August 29, the regiment reported 24 officers and 283 men present for duty. At the Battle of Bentonville it sustained 7 casualties and on March 23, 1865, totaled 243 effectives. They surrendered on April 26. The field officers were Colonels Stephen M. Boykin and Laurence M. Keitt, Lieutenant Colonels Olin M. Dantzler and Paul A. McMichael. And Majors Mimms and John M. Partlow.7,9

1880 Census
Jefferson D. Sharp was listed as the head of household on the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, enumerated at Platt Springs, Lexington, SC, on 1 June 1880. His name was recorded as Jefferson D. Sharp. Living in the household were Jefferson D. Sharp, his wife, Mahalah E. Sharp. Their dwelling was recorded as 7, and their family as 10, in enumeration district 133, page 1 A. Presumably next door, was head of household John B. Sharp and his family, dwelling 6 and family 9.

According to the 1880 Census, Jefferson D. Sharp was 41 and married to Mahalah E. Sharp, who was 51. Jefferson was a farmer. It appears they could read and write. They and their parents were born in S.C.5

1900 Census
Jefferson D. Sharppe was listed as the head of household on the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, enumerated at Bull Swamp, Lexington, SC, on 20 June 1900. His name was recorded as Jefferson D. Sharppe. Living in the household were Jefferson D. Sharppe, his wife, Mahaly Sharppe. The census was enumerated by J.E. Gantt. Their dwelling was recorded as 284, and their family as 294, in enumeration district 33, on sheet 15 B. On the same census page was head of household Matthew L. Martin and his family, in dwelling 290 and family 302.

According to the 1900 Census, Jefferson was born in April 1839 and was aged 61. His wife, Mahaly, was born in 1830 (no month listed) and was aged 70. They had been married 43 years and had 2 children, 1 of whom was living. They and their parents were born in S.C. Jefferson was a farmer. They could read and write, and they owned their farm free of mortgage.6

On 3 March 1901 Mahala E. Sharpe died at age 69, leaving behind spouse, Jefferson D. Sharpe, at age 61.10

Jefferson D. Sharpe married Ellen (?) in 1901.7

1910 Census
Jeff D. Sharpe was listed as the head of household on the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, enumerated at Bull Swamp, Lexington, SC, on 9 May 1910. His name was recorded as Jeff D. Sharpe. Living in the household were Jeff D. Sharpe, his wife, Ellen Sharpe. Their dwelling was recorded as 473, and their family as 488, in enumeration district 29, on sheet 24 B.

According to the 1910 Census, Jeff, aged 71, and Ellen, aged 55, had been married 9 years. The census enumerator put a 2 by Jeff’s “m” for married and a 1 by Ellen’s “m” for married. Jeff had 2 children, 1 of whom was living. There were no children indicated for Ellen. They and their parents were born in S.C. Jeff was a farmer in general farming. He worked of his own account. They could read and write. Jeff owned the farm free of mortgage. He was a survivor of the Confederate Army.7

Death
Jefferson David Sharpe died on 1 February 1911 at age 71.3 He was buried at Antioch Baptist Church, Corner of W.E. Jeffcoat Road and Antioch Church Road, Lexington, SC, His tombstone reads, "Erected by his daughter-in-law Mary C. Sharpe." This is probably the wife of John Benjamin Sharpe.3,11

Reeder of New Brookland, Mrs. Lucius Harley, Miss Onadell Martin, Miss Dorothy Martin and Miss Margaret Martin of Swansea; three sons, A.E. Martin of Honolulu, Hawaii; W.D. Martin and M.B. Martin of Swansea; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Rawls and Mrs. Tom Mixon of Wagener; one brother, H.A. Martin of Wagener, and several grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon from Antioch Baptist Church by the Rev. Edgar Davis, pastor. Internment will be in the churchyard.2

Williams, Virginia L. Williams. Their dwelling was recorded as 98, and their family as 98, in enumeration district 14, page 11. Next door in dwelling 98 is William W. Williamson and family.

According to the 1880 Census, Summers Williams was 33 and married to Mary B. Williams, who was 25. Summers Williams was a farmer. He and Mary and their parents were born in South Carolina. They could read and write.4

Mary Belton Williams was listed as the wife of the head of household on the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, enumerated at Rocky Grove Township, Aiken County, South Carolina, on 19 June 1900. Her name was recorded as Mary Belton Williams. Living in the household were Summers Williams, his wife, Mary Belton Williams, children, William B. Williams, George G. Williams, Thurman Williams, Virginia L. Williams, John Williams. Their dwelling and family was recorded in enumeration district 31 on sheet ??B. (I can’t read the dwelling and family numbers.)

According to the 1900 Census, Summers Williams was born in Dec. 1848 and was 51. Mary Belton Williams was born in Jan. 1853 and was 47. They had been married 26 years. Mary Belton was the mother of 7 children, 6 of whom were living. Summers and Mary Belton and their parents were born in South Carolina. They could read and write. Summers was a farmer and a merchant. They owned their farm free of mortgage.2

Death
Mary Belton Williamson died on 9 August 1904 at South Carolina at age 48.3 She was buried at Mount Hermon Baptist Church, Pelion, Lexington, South Carolina.3
