Jacob and Sarah Coleman Myers Family- A Research by the Salt Lake Genealogy Library 6 Aug 1963

A research survey conducted on the Myers line by the Genealogy Library.
The names Artemisia Sidney Myers, Jacob Myers and Sarah Coleman were checked in the Temple Records Index Bureau and Church Record Archives. An endowment card is on file for both Jacob Myers and Artemisia Sidney Myers. A group sheet was also located in the Archives for Frederick Myers and Elizabeth Wirick listing Jacob as a child (copies enclosed).
The early Church Records file was searched for Jacob Myers and it was found he was ordained a High Priest in Nauvoo on 8th April 1841 and also received a Patriarchal Blessing in Kirtland on 13 Sept. 183?.
Several sources from our Locality File were checked including baptisms and endowments for the dead in the St. George Temple and the records pertaining to Jacob Myers and Sarah Coleman Myers have been extracted.
In an effort to gain more information concerning Jacob Myers, a trip was made to the Church Historian's office to search in the Journal History of the Church and the entries referring to Jacob Myers were extracted and enclosed.
Jacob's death date appears to be Oct. 17th 1867 and from the fact that he was in Council Bluffs in 184? that he came West.
However time did not permit the research to go farther and it was suggested that many early Church records could be searched. In addition, the original records (land, probate, etc.) of every locality of residence should be searched.

April 18, 2000:
Myers Information 4-18-2000 via Email from Kay William Foote (Safford, Arizona):
"Once upon a time long ago, when I worked for a living, I was at Cerro de Pasco in Peru. My parents came down to visit. they took a side trip to Manchu Pichu to see the ruins My father told me later of his trip..They ran a gasoline powered rail car up from Cusco for the tourist day trip. It stalled on a grade.
My father said "I knew we would have trouble when I saw them putting that Standard gas in the tank."

One of the passengers came over and introduced himself  "I am Paul Jacob Myers. I am president of Standard Oil Company of California. I want you to know Standard gasoline is the best in the world." My father said "I am glad to meet you. I am a great grandson of Jacob Myers."

They started talking about the family and became very friendly. He said that after Nauvoo, his family returned to Richland County, Ohio. The best land was already taken up. They took up land in an area neglected because of bad water. You know, awful taste and a little black scum.

Along came a fast talking oil promoter and traded them some shares in a "paper oil company" for drilling rights The "paper company" was formed to buy and trade shares of other oil companies..

Well the promoter's name was John D. Rockefeller and the "paper company" became Standard of New Jersey (now Exxon) He said his family had been very prosperous ever since." (Kay William Foote)

Birth-Marriage-Death: Early Church Memb- Susan W. Easton (birth 28 Feb 1812); IGI;

Obituary Deseret News 15 Dec 1886 p.752: "...Jonathan Campbell was baptized in 1839 or 1840 by Benager Campbell. He gathered with the Saints to Nauvoo in the early part of the year 1844, previous to the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith. At the time the Saints were expelled, he and his family were driven across the river, underwent many hardships and finally arrived at Winter Quarters. When Captain Allen came to Council Bluffs to get 4 or 5 companies of men to go to Mexico. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion 16 July 1846 and left with the camp of saints all that was near and dear to him, a loving wife and three small children. His wife, he never saw again as she died at Council Bluffs... Her 3 little children were brought to Salt Lake Valley with the pioneers. Jonathan went with the Battalion to California and received an honorable discharge. He came to the Salt Lake Valley by the southern route from Los Angeles in 1848. He lived in Salt Lake City until autumn of 1850, when he moved to Ogden with his wife and children. He had married Lucinda Shipman and wintered at Farr's Fort. In the spring of 1851 he helped to settle North Ogden and lived there the rest of his life. He was a teacher all this time except for the last two years."

47. Lucinda Shipman Austin-8H7W-XK

BIRTH: Nauvoo Temple Endowment Register 1845-46 (23 Dec 1822); Patron Section FGS- Margaret Callahan Eckersley (23 Dec 1823 see note reference: Adoption by William AUSTIN); (Early Church Members- Susan W. Easton: "FGS by spouse" shows Lucinda's parents: Daniel SHIPMAN/Olive LEE); TIB EH 1491 bk A p 54; Arch Rec Euroca Brimhall DICKSON; Family Record of Sarah J. R. Campbell and Margaret Callahan Eckersley, Ogden, Utah. Birthplace also listed as Athens, Leeds, Ontario, Canada.

MARRIAGE: (1) abt 1837 Thomas William CALLAHAN (2) 1846 Jonathan CAMPBELL Jr.

DEATH: Patron Section FGS; Early Church Members- Susan W. Easton;

NOTE: According to Early Church Members- Susan W. Easton, Thomas William CALLAHAN was a Private in Company B of the Mormon Battalion. Jonathan CAMPBELL also enlisted in the Mormon Battalion- Company B, 16 Jul 1846. Jonathan's wife died at Council Bluffs and her 3 small children were brought to "the valley" in 1847. Jonathan joined the children in Utah in 1848.
Thomas William Callahan did not return for some time from California after the Mormon Battalion. The children of Lucinda's by Thomas William CALLAHAN were sealed with Lucinda to (2) Jonathan CAMPBELL (Endowment House 15 Sep 1852 husband/wife). Above source shows marriage to Jonathan CAMPBELL Feb 1846.
(A child by Thomas William CALLAHAN was born 3 Dec 1846). The first child born by Lucinda and Jonathan CAMPBELL was on 15 Mar 1850 at Salt Lake City. They settled at North Ogden, Weber, Utah.

Thomas William CALLAHAN married (2) 1865 ? Mary Ann GROVER (first child born to them 19 Sep 1863 at Smithfield, Cache, Utah). They settled at Park Valley, Box Elder, Utah;

Lynn Ransom Burton 1994, Brigham City, Utah: (2 endowment dates 7 Feb 1846 and 15 Sep 1852) "2 fathers listed for Lucinda- William Austin and Daniel Shipman; she is often listed as Lucinda Austin and also as Lucinda Shipman. Some family members, especially the late Verna R. Sederholm, collector of genealogy for Ransom and Austin families, did not accept Lucinda as a child of William Austin at all. Some insist that Daniel Shipman was Lucinda's father. Lucinda's first child, Alma Austin Callahan was raised by William Austin as "Alma Austin". Thomas William Callahan deserted Lucinda and family, so Lucinda and her children were sealed to her 2nd husband, Jonathan Campbell (wife sealed 15 Sep 1852 Salt Lake Temple, children sealed 18 Jun 1924). The date in our records for Lucinda's sealing to William Austin is 12 Dec 1934, but not verified by [Utah] Gen[ealogical] Soc[iety], and she has been cleared at Ogden Temple."

NOTE: Juanita Bitton jbitton@silverstar.com Swan Valley, Idaho:
(June 2000): "William Austin and an unknown woman were her real parents, but her mother died giving birth. William GAVE Lucinda to Daniel Shipman and his wife Olive Lee. When they joined the Church they came to the States to be with the Saints. William Austin either came with them or later, but he was an important part of Lucinda's life. Jonathan & Lucinda had 8 children, but only 3 lived to be adults.
When her oldest son, Jonathan was 16 and Helaman was 9 she took then to Box Elder County where Andrew Callahan was already living and she homesteaded a farm there. Jonathan married Sarah Joiner Raliegh of Salt Lake City and continued to live on the farm with his Mother until his family was almost grown, then he served a Mission in North Carolina. We still have his diaries he kept on his Mission. When he returned, after a few years he moved his family to the Rigby, Idaho area in 1905. His Mother came with the family and died here in 1906 and is buried in Lewisville, Jefferson County, Idaho.
I have heard rumors that she [Lucinda] divorced her husband, Jonathan, but have no proof of this. In fact a search is being conducted in Ogden, Weber County right now to see if this is true. I rather doubt it, as my Mother-in-law was her granddaughter, and she never mentioned it to any of her family. She was Jonathan's daughter and lived with her grandmother all of her life, and I think she would have known. I'm just having this search made to stop the rumors!"

NOTE 2: From Juanita Bitton, Swan Valley, Idaho- jbitton@silverstar.com (June 2000) "Have you ever been to Park Valley or Rosette, Utah? They are located in the far northwest corner of Utah.
We went several years ago - the year of the 150th celebration of the LDS Church. There isn't even a post office at Rosette anymore, but we did find the old... and visited with the old man who owns it now. We asked if there had ever been a written history, and found out there were actually three of them. We visited with the wife of the author of the first one - and she, incidentally, was the oldest living person who was actually born in Rosette. She had recently had a stroke and wasn't very lucid, but her son and daughter-in-law sent us to the Post Mistress in Park Valley, where we hit real pay dirt. She had two of the three history's available, and the third was at the printers. I paid for all three right then, and she mailed me the third when it was finished. The one titled "PARK VALLEY, UTAH 1976" is the one telling about Lucinda, Jonathan and Helaman coming there in 1871. It also said that Andrew Callahan was already living there, as well as Levi Campbell, and that William Callahan (her ex-husband) came later.
Recently I found that Lucinda & Jonathan's oldest daughter, Lucinda Phebe, was married to Levi Campbell and they had a large family, but she divorced him and married John Nef. one of two of the children called themselves "Nef", but they were all born while she was still married to Levi. Another daughter, Rhoda Ann, lived to be 13 before dying in Malad, Idaho.
I wondered why they were so far north but she died in 1871, and they must have been on their way to Park Valley - I've been told there is a 2 CONT? Got an answer to my question of the divorce between Jonathan and Lucinda today from the records office in the Weber County Court House, and they could find NO record of a divorce, although the one for Lucinda Phebe and Levi Campbell is there. IF she did divorce him could it have been in Box Elder County? I'm more confused now than ever!"

9. May 17, 1967: A letter just received from Mrs. Zella R. Bennion, Altamont, Utah to the effect that her 2 ggmother, Catherine Maggard married Anthony Head, who died in 1843 in Nauvoo. She started West, got to Mr. Pisgah where she died. See the above monument inscription for "widow Head Whiting". She has a letter written by a daughter of Cataherine Head to "father Whiting" as he was called and wife of Catherine were cut off or disfellowshipped because of some minor infraction. They both died at Mt. Pisgah, and baptisms were re-done for both in Utah. Sally Hulett, wife of Elisha Whiting died in Aug. 1846 and Elisha died in March, 1848, so they could not have been married for long. Catherine was born in 1792, so there would have been no children from this marriage.
