WIFE NOTES:
Obituary, April 30, 1877, Gazette & Bulletin: ALMOST NINETY FIVE Mrs. Margaret Harris, who died at the residence of her son W.S. Harris, Esq. In Jersey Shore on the 19th of April, 1877, was in many respects a remarkable woman and worthy of more than a passing notice. She was born on an island in the river opposite Jersey Shore on December 19, 1787, nearly ninety years ago. Her father, John English wasn't married until 1784. His oldest son, Claudius, born in 1785, was the first child born on Pine Creek. John English was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and fought under the banner of the dashing Mad Anthony Wayne. He was with Washington at Valley Forge and shared the trials and tribulations of that dreadful winter. When the colonial army crossed the Delaware and attacked the hessians, the veteran English was with them. After participating in numerous engagements, he retired at the close of the struggle, which resulted in the independence of the United States. He emigrated to the West Branch Valley. He remained for a brief period with his family on the island where the subject of this sketch was born. In due time he located on an island in Pine Creek below Waterville where he resided for a long time. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace when the seat of government was at Lancaster. All this region at that time was embraced in Northumberland County. Miss English was married to Mr. Harris in 1803. She raised a family of eight sons and three daughters, five of the former and two of the latter of whom are still living. John Harris, the oldest of the sons still living, has attained his 75th year and resides in Warren County. This remarkable woman passed through the trying scenes of the "Big Runaway" when all the settlers in the valley had to flee before the relentless savages, who destroyed their improvements, burned their crude cabins and slew many who fell into their hands. One of her, aunts, Rebecca Boatman was captured at that time and was scalped. Mrs. Harris was a devote member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for nearly seventy years and her house was a home for preachers of all denominations. She retained her faculties unimpaired to a very great age and could relate the trails and privations endured by the early pioneers with great clearness. When she was born there were very few settlements in this pleasant valley. She saw the wilderness reclaimed and witnessed the growth of the beautiful cities and boroughs which are found on every hand. A few years ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis which somewhat impaired her speech, but her mind remained remarkably clear up to the period of her death. Her husband, the late Abraham Harris was on board the "President" and took part in the action at Tripoli. He also served as a Captain in the War of 1812. In the death of this venerable lady another link in the chain which binds the present with the long ago has been severed and few, if any, now remain who participated in the trials by the pioneers of the West Branch Valley.
