Tennesse Norton
Last Update 2/23/2008
Tennesse "Tennie" Norton born 16 May 1856 and died 24 Feb 1935, Madison Co, NC. Tennie was the daughter of William Norton and Nancy Shelton. (Her parents still has not been proven)

Tennie was buried at Long's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Weaverville, Buncombe Co, NC.
Tennie first married Robert Noe about 1870 - 1872. I do not have proof of this but according to census records, Tennesse Noe and her daughter Elizabeth who was 7 at the time was living at Big Laurel Madison Co, NC. She was 23 years old and divorced the 1880 census shows.
Robert Noe was living Wilkes Co, NC with his Father and Mother John and Martha Noe. 1870
At the same time 1880,
George Henderson Gosnell is living in Greene Co, TN with his mother Margaret Elizabeth Sams Gosnell and he also was divorced according to the census. And the story is told through the family and years that Margaret Elizabeth Gosnell had moved to Limestone Springs, TN with Dudley Solomon and had four more children that took the Gosnell name instead of the Dudley name. Apparently Dudley left Margaret and married someone else. That someone else was Nancy Ramsey Wallin.
Solomon Dudley is said to have owned land in Madison Co, NC. (According to the map, Greenville, TN is just across the mountain from Madison, Co, NC.) So when Dudley left Margaret Elizabeth Sams Gosnell, she came back to Madison Co, NC in about 1881.
Tennesse "Tennie" Norton Noe and George Henderson Gosnell met about that time because they married 20 Sep 1883 and started a family.
Their children are:
Joseph Teet Gosnell born 15 May 1886.
Lula Bell Gosnell born 18 Apr 1890.
Leroy Gosnell (Lee Roy) I will explain this name later. born 19 Nov 1895.
Milford Gosnell born 1 Jul 1899.
So along with Tennie's daughter Elizabeth Jane Noe they had 5 children and another name has surfaced that I haven't figure out who he belongs to yet and that is Blanton Gosnell that was born 21 April 1893. I believe he could have been Tennie and George's son. He certainly would have fit in between Lula and Leroy.
From what I can tell by some family notes from 1955 Blanton Gosnell was listed along with George and Tennie's children. I will research this further.
Elizabeth Jane Noe (Daughter of Tennie Norton and Robert Noe) born 1873 and died 10 Feb 1952 Buncombe Co, NC married Spencer or Spence Massey. And she married John Cleveland McHone. When Jane died she was listed as Jane McHone and her father was listed as Robert Noe. BK 39 Page 1075, Buncombe Co, NC Register of Deeds.

1910 Grapevine, Madison Co, NC.
As you can see on the 1910 census, Jane Massey was living next door to her Mother and Step-Father, George H and Tennesse Gosnell. Don't know where Spence Massey was at this point. It says she had been married for 21 years. I believe they were married between 1889 and 1892.

1910 Grapevine, Madison Co, NC. More of Jane's household. They were on two pages of the census.
Elizabeth "Jane" Noe and Spencer Massey had the following children:
Tennie May Massey born 1893.
Etta Massey born 1896.
Robert J Massey born 1899.
Ottis Charlie Massey born 1902 and died 1998, Buncombe Co, NC.
Isabelle Lottie Massey born 7 Aug 1905 died 2 Mar 1991, Buncombe Co, NC. Married a Cabe.
Richard Massey born 1908.

Photo This is the photo that pieced it all together.

Elizabeth "Jane" Noe Massey married John Cleveland McHone born Dec 1885 and died 13 May 1960, Buncombe Co, NC. John was the son of Gilbert Alphonso McHone and Lola Murray. And for right now I am listing one daughter and there could be more. On Oct 22 1957 - Buncombe Co, NC J. C. McHone gave Mabel McHone Garren his property. It states he is a "widower" and that he would live on the property until his death. French Broad Twp 4.65 acres. Book 793 Page 243. If there were more children I believe they would have been listed on this document.
