Death Certificate States he was age 94 at his death in 1932, which would put his birth year at 1838 not possible since his parents were married in 1849. Lists his father as Wm. Maner and mother as Margaret Thorp.

Death: Death Certificate states he was 94 years of age at his death and that his birthdate was December 25, 1837. His parents were not married until 1849 and he shows up as 9/12 in the census of 1850.

Obituary, The Asheville (NC) Citizen-Times: Sally Banks Edwards, 80, of 19 Oak Park Place, Asheville, died Wednesday in an Asheville hospital. A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Bryce G. and Harriett Maynor Banks and the wife of Charles L. Edwards, who died in 1956. She was a volunteer with Asheville Veterans Administration Medical Center, with a 15,000 hour award. She was a charter member of Ladies Auxiliary of World War Veterans 505, American Legion Auxiliary, No. 2, VFW Post No. 891 Auxiliary, Salvation Army Auxiliary, Women of the Moose Chapter 179, and Groce United Methodist Church. Surviving are a sister, Alta Benfield of Lenoir; and a brother, Woodfin Banks of Asheville. Graveside services will be at 2 p. m. Saturday in Green Hills Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he retired from Greyhound Bus Lines after 35 years of service. He was a member of Skyland Baptist Church, where he was a former teacher in the Gideon Sunday school class and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a son of the late Garfield F. Wood Sr. and Lillie Mae Boone Wood and husband of the late Helen Marie Butler Wood. He is survived by his daughter, Helen June Reagan of Arden, grandchildren, Tracy D. Reagan and Robin Devaynes, both of Asheville, two great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Skyland Baptist Church with the Rev. Perry Brindley officiating. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Volunteer Memorial Team. Mr. Banks was born May 21, 1912, in Buncombe County and was a resident of Fairfax, Va., for a number of years where he retired from landscaping. He was an avid hunter and a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved the Lord. Jay Hugh was the son of the late Roscoe and Essie Mainer Banks and widower of Ruth Carter Banks who died in 1983. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tina Wilson, sister, Willene Weekly and brothers, the Rev. Maurice Banks, Walter, Guy, Felmer, Robert, Bobby Joe and Billy Joe Banks.

Surviving are his daughters, Peggy Elkins and her husband, Edd, and Judy Wilson and her husband, Clarence, all of Weaverville, son, Jay Hugh Banks Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Woodbridge, Va., sister, Lou Ann Banks of Bessemer City, half-sister, Dorothy Martin of Hendersonville, brothers, Charles and Arnold Banks, both of Weaverville, 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

105. Howard married Freda Irene Sue RADCLIFF on 3 Jun 1966. Freda was born on 7 Sep 1947 in Asheville, Buncombe Co, NC. She died on 13 Jun 2003 in Asheville, Buncombe Co, NC. She was buried in Newfound Baptist Church Cemetery, Asheville, NC.

Freda Irene Sue Radcliff Wood, 55, of 2 Pine Knoll Drive, Asheville, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, June 13, 2003, at her residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Freda was born on September 7, 1947. A native and resident of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Carter Woodrow and Sally Mae Radcliff. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold Dean Radcliff.

A 1965 graduate of Clyde A Erwin High School, she taught school for 24 years at West Buncombe Elementary. During her career she received Teacher Assistant of the Year Award in 1992 and 2003 and the Gift Hero of the Week Award from WLOS-TV in May 2003. She touched so many lives in her life with her work as teacher’s assistant and her role in her faith with God. She was very active in her church choir at Newfound Baptist Church. She dearly loved her grandson, Colin, and spending time with him and her family.

Freda is survived by her husband of 37 years on June 3, 2003, Howard “Cecil” Wood, Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Khrista Wood Bryson and Randy Bryson; a son and daughter-in-law, Jason S. Wood and Wendy B. Wood; a grandson, Colin N. Bryson; “Part-Time Child”, Tamara D. McMahan of Charlotte; sister, Linda Pitts and her husband, Joe of Asheville, Brenda Carson of Pennsylvania, Patricia Whitt and her husband Gerald of Candler; a brother, Gerald King and his wife Mary of New York; many nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday at Newfound Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Phillips and Mark Ball officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tracy Lee, Scott Lee, Johnny Doan, Josh Shipman, Tim Shipman and Dee Harper.

Her family will receive friends from 7:30-9:30 pm Sunday at the church and request that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Buncombe Elementary, c/o Sue Carroll for the Media Center for “Books for Children” or to the American Cancer Society for the research of Endometrial Cancer, Asheville Administrative Resource Center, 120 Executive Park, Building 1, Asheville, NC 28801.
