Tate Cummings Benfield, 90, of Montclair Circle, Lenoir, NC died Tuesday November 15, 2005 at Lenoir HealthCare Center.
Mr. Benfield was born April 7, 1915 in Watauga County to the late Milas Benfield and Amanda Fields Benfield.
Mr. Benfield was a member of South Lenoir Church of God, and a retired furniture maker.
Mr. Benfield was preceded in death by his parents Milas and Amanda Benfield, his wife Ruth Smith Benfield, an infant son Roger Benfield , and a number of brothers and sisters. He is survived by three sons Dean Benfield, Ken Benfield, and Bill Benfield all of Lenoir, NC, two daughters Helen Alley of Lenoir, NC, and Loretta Hucks of Florence, SC. Mr. Benfield is also survived by seventeen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-granchildren, and a number of great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 pm Wednesday November 16, 2005 at Pendrys Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at the South Lenoir Church of God on Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 2:00pm. Mr. Benfield will lie in state thirty minutes prior to services. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. The Reverend Ernest Bowes will be officiating.
Mr. Benfields grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

GRANITE FALLS - Mr. Jerry Keith Benfield Sr., 71, of Spring Valley Place, Granite Falls, died Friday, May 23, 2008, at Valdese Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born Dec. 21, 1936, in Caldwell County to Dolly Cannon Benfield of Granite Falls and the late Charles Edgar Benfield. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served over 21 years. He was stationed in Fort Jackson, S.C., (four times), Fort Knox, Ky., Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Polk, La., Fort Greely, Ala., Fort Benning, Ga., (two times), Fort Gordon, Ga., Fort Bragg, N.C., Vietnam and Munich, Augsburg and Boebling, Germany (two tours). He retired as sergeant first class and was awarded the following: The Combat Infantryman's Badge, The Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, The Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal (six times), National Defense Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Vietnamese Service Medal and Vietnamese Campaign Medal. Mr. Benfield attended Temple Hill Baptist Church as a young man. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Jones; four brothers, Dale, David, Ronnie and Donald Benfield; two sisters, Alice Benfield and Hazel Sanders; and a brother-in-law, James Hoyle. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Kitty Conley Benfield of the home; five daughters, Anita Estes and Penny Newman and husband, Jerry, all of Phoenix City, Ala., Rena Purvis and husband, Patrick, of Columbus, Ga., Kathy White and husband, Ed, of Morganton and Angie Seagle and husband, Chris, of Vale; three sons, Jerry Keith Benfield Jr. and wife, Elaine, of Opelika, Ala., Chaun Benfield and wife, Pam, of Granite Falls and Jeff Braswell and wife, Brenda, of Valdese; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six sisters, Betty Hoyle of Lenoir, Carolyn Starnes and husband, Buzz, Barbara Smith and husband, Mickey, and Joyce Benfield, all of Granite Falls, Cricket Brown and husband, Jimmy, of Rhodhiss and Beverly Benfield of Hickory; a son-in-law, Kenny Jones of Columbus, Ga.; a brother-in-law, Bill Sanders; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Benfield will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 25, 2008, at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clyde Bumgarner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with full military honors provided by members of Disabled American Veterans 84 and 6. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 25, 2008, at Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
