Skyland - Garfield F. Smokey Wood Jr., 87, of 5 Atkins St., Skyland, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center after an extended illness. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he retired from Greyhound Bus Lines after 35 years of service. He was a member of Skyland Baptist Church, where he was a former teacher in the Gideon Sunday school class and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a son of the late Garfield F. Wood Sr. and Lillie Mae Boone Wood and husband of the late Helen Marie Butler Wood. He is survived by his daughter, Helen June Reagan of Arden, grandchildren, Tracy D. Reagan and Robin Devaynes, both of Asheville, two great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Skyland Baptist Church with the Rev. Perry Brindley officiating. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Volunteer Memorial Team. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he retired from American Enka Corp., was a member of Westwood Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran. He was the son of the late Garfield Wood Sr. and Lillie Mae Dillingham Wood and was also preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Ann Wood. He is survived by his wife, Dessie Wood of the home; son, Howard Cecil Wood Jr. of Asheville; daughter, Georgia Ann Lewis of Arden; brother, Garfield Wood of Skyland; stepdaughters, Emma and Jeri Meadows, both of Asheville, and Carrie Black of Leicester; grandchildren, Timothy Edward Lewis, Khrista Bryson and Jason Wood; three stepgrandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Anders-Rice Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Charles Phillips officiating. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Asheville ~ Mary Wood Frady, 78, of 5 Irwin St., died Monday, January 1, 2001 at a local nursing home. A native of Buncombe County, Mrs. Frady was the daughter of the late Garfield Wood, Sr. and Lily Mae Boone Wood, and the wife of the late George “Fletcher” Frady.
Mrs. Frady worked as a machine operator for Enka, a cafeteria worker for Biltmore Elementary School, and also had been employed by Biltmore Dairy Co. She was a member of Fruits of Labor Worship Center.
Mrs. Frady is survived by one son, Wayne Reno of Asheville and two brothers, Garfield Wood of Skyland and Howard Wood of Candler. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 4, 2001 at Woodlawn Cemetery with Rev. William Warren and Rev. Jimmy Sales officiating. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is in charge of arrangements.
Canton-Henry Ervin Reno, Jr. 84 died Monday, August 12, 2002 at Memorial Mission Hospital.
He was a son of the late Henry Ervin Sr., and Mittie Allison Reno. He retired from American Enka with 40 years of service and was a member of Beaverdam United Methodist Church. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II.
He is survived by one son, Wayne Reno of Asheville, one sister, Mary Thompson of Canton and a friend Nellie Trull of Canton.
Funeral services will be at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes with Reverend Naomi King officiating. Burial will follow in the Beaverdam Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Mary Thompson, 51 N. Main Street, Canton, NC 28716.

Freda Irene Sue Radcliff Wood, 55, of 2 Pine Knoll Drive, Asheville, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, June 13, 2003, at her residence following a courageous battle with cancer.
Freda was born on September 7, 1947. A native and resident of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Carter Woodrow and Sally Mae Radcliff. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold Dean Radcliff.
A 1965 graduate of Clyde A Erwin High School, she taught school for 24 years at West Buncombe Elementary. During her career she received Teacher Assistant of the Year Award in 1992 and 2003 and the Gift Hero of the Week Award from WLOS-TV in May 2003. She touched so many lives in her life with her work as teacher’s assistant and her role in her faith with God. She was very active in her church choir at Newfound Baptist Church. She dearly loved her grandson, Colin, and spending time with him and her family.
Freda is survived by her husband of 37 years on June 3, 2003, Howard “Cecil” Wood, Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Khrista Wood Bryson and Randy Bryson; a son and daughter-in-law, Jason S. Wood and Wendy B. Wood; a grandson, Colin N. Bryson; “Part-Time Child”, Tamara D. McMahan of Charlotte; sister, Linda Pitts and her husband, Joe of Asheville, Brenda Carson of Pennsylvania, Patricia Whitt and her husband Gerald of Candler; a brother, Gerald King and his wife Mary of New York; many nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday at Newfound Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Phillips and Mark Ball officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tracy Lee, Scott Lee, Johnny Doan, Josh Shipman, Tim Shipman and Dee Harper.
Her family will receive friends from 7:30-9:30 pm Sunday at the church and request that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Buncombe Elementary, c/o Sue Carroll for the Media Center for “Books for Children” or to the American Cancer Society for the research of Endometrial Cancer, Asheville Administrative Resource Center, 120 Executive Park, Building 1, Asheville, NC 28801.
