Virginia Mae Crouse Pope, age 87, of Bost Nursery Rd., Maiden passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton. Born June 6, 1922 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Mack Crouse and the late Minnie Dellinger Crouse. Mrs. Pope was a member of East Maiden Baptist Church in Maiden. In addition to her parents, five brothers, Forest, Guy, Hall “Dock”, Woodrow, and Glenn “Bud” Crouse and a son-in-law, Fred L. Brown, Jr. preceded her in death. Survivors include: Husband: Charles Junior (Gigger) Pope of the home. Son: Larry Wayne Pope and wife, Joanie of Catawba. Daughter: Barbara Pope Brown of Newton. Grandchildren: Mark & Michael Brown 5 Great-Grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden with the Rev. Nathaniel Austin and Rev. Andrew Rawls officiating. Burial will follow in Maiden City Cemetery in Maiden. The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 30, 2009 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden.

Born June 4, 1913, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Grover and Essie Hilderbrand. Mrs. Crouse retired from American Efird after 57 years of employment. She was a lifelong member of East Maiden Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guy R. Crouse; a daughter, Evelyn C. Little of Mooresville; a son, Gary Dean Crouse of Lincolnton; four brothers; and six sisters. She is survived by a son, Neil Crouse and wife, Darlene, of Maiden; a daughter, Mary Ellen Dellinger and husband, Kirby, of Lincolnton; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at 4 p.m. at East Maiden Baptist Church in Maiden, with the Rev. Nathaniel Austin officiating. Burial will follow in Maiden City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. at East Maiden Baptist Church, prior to the service. Memorials may be made to East Maiden Baptist Church, 1400 E. In addition to her parents, her first husband, Forrest Crouse; second husband, Lloyd Bumgarner; son, Darrell Crouse; daughter, Judy Huffman; three sisters, Wellenia Parham, Martha Deviney and Violna Weathers; and two grandsons, Wayne Crouse and Jeffrey Morgan, preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons, Mickey Joe Crouse of Burlington and Jackie Bumgarner of Maiden; three sisters, Mozelle Moore of Stanley, Gladys Sipe of Maiden and Millie Shook of Newton; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden, with the Rev. Nathaniel Austin officiating.
