"John Groenendyke, one of the early pioneers of this county, died at his residence in Harrison Township, yesterday at 11 o'clock, A.M. The funeral services will be conducted at the residence to-morrow , at 10 o'clock, and the remains buried at Haven Chapel."

"Worthy Veteran Answers Last Call Louis GRONDYKE, who died at his home in Dilley, Monday afternoon, July 28, at the age of 79 years, was born in Fayette, Indiana, Dec. 6th, 1833. He enlisted in the army in 1861, serving one year. He was married in 1865 to Mary E. HARD, who has been a faithful companion all through life's journey and was with him when the end came. Mr. GRONDYKE has been a resident of Dilley for the past 19 years, where he was well and favorably known. Deceased had but one child, Mrs. May CONLEY, who had been at her father's bedside during his last illness. The funeral services were held at the late residence on
Wednesday
morning at 10 o'clock under the auspices of the G.A.R., with burial in
Forest View cemetery." |
LULA G. (GROENDYKE) SUMAN Source:

"Mrs. Lula G. SUMAN, 85, 207 W. 13th street, died at 2:30 a.m. today from an abdominal hemorrhage which she suffered only a short time before her death. Mrs. Suman was the widow of George SUMAN, one of the founders of the old Rochester Normal College. The Sumans came to Rochester in 1902 and resided here until 1917, when they moved to Minneapolis, Minn. Her husband died in 1928 at Minneapolis. Mrs. Suman returned to Rochester in 1937 and has resided here since. She was born March 8, 1868, in Blackford county, Ind., and in 1888 was married to George Suman. Her parents were Montgomery and Malinda (Senour) Groendyke. Mrs. Suman for several years was a college and school teacher. Her husband was a professor in the Rochester Normal College. Survivors are two sons, Herbert SUMAN, Oak Park, Ill.; George SUMAN, Waupaca, Wis.; two granddaughters and one great-grandson. The body rests at Zimmerman Brothers funeral home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete." |

"In the city of New York on the first day of November, Mary
Hard was
born. Over 25 years ago they came to Dilley, purchased property and there some years since Mr. Groendyke, a veteran of the Civil War, answered the final roll call. At Glenwood, Iowa, about 46 years ago, Mrs. Groendyke joined the Baptist church. But with a permanent residence in Dilley she transferred her membership to the Methodist Episcopal church of Dilley. Her age was 75 years, 6 months and 19 days. Funeral services were held in the home Monday afternoon,

by L.W.

of Buckley. Friends from out of town were Mrs. M.I. Conwell, Mrs. Page
and Mrs. Bagwell, of Portland; Mrs. Vaught and Mrs. Jackson, of
Hillsboro,
and many from Forest Grove and other near by points." We desire to express our sincere thanks to neighbors and friends of Dilley for their kindness and the beautiful floral offerings tendered us in our bereavement in the death of our mother, Mrs. Groendyke. - Mrs. May Connolly and Family" "The death of Mrs. Mary Groendyke came with a shock to her many friends, with whom she had spent the day in apparently as good health as usual. And the high esteem in which she was held was shown by the large gathering of friends from far and near, who attended the funeral." "Mr. and Mrs. Stevent, who have been spending the winter with his sister, Mrs. Minerva Graves, have rented the Groendyke property and will move there within a few days." "Mrs. Ruth Will attended Mrs. Groendyke's funeral at Dilley Monday."
