Dumont may be the same Petrus, born about 1756 son of Petrus Dumont and Maria VAN WAGENEN. He could also be the son of Pieter Dumont born about Nov 1733 in Kingston and died before 1765, son of Johannes DUMONT and Rachel SCHOONMAKER. NOTE: Simon Sager seems to be a link to the Cornelius Dumond family (son Simon Peter would have been named after grandfather and perhaps uncle. Simon Sager only Simon Sager before 1810). ----- NOTES FOR Maria ECKERT: NAME: Ekkert (on marriage certificate), Ekkert or Ekker at christening. Most often spelled Eckert. (Peter) (Dumond) DUMONT and Maria ECKERT, was born 3 Jun 1786/1787 in Esopus, Ulster County, New York, died 2 Dec 1871 in Dereham Township, Oxford County, Ontario, buried in Old Delmer, Dereham Township, Oxford County, Ontario. Married about 1808 in Tioga(?) County, New York to Mary SAGER born about 1790 in Albany(?) County, New York. ----- NOTES FOR Cornelius DUMOND: QUESTIONABLE LINK: Several dates are listed for his birth: 1784/1785 (1851 and 1861 census), 1785/1786 (1871 census). His cemetery stone says 1786, but his listed age would be 1787. Thus, he was born about 1784/1787. If he was born in June of 1787, then there is no doubt that he was christened 1 July 1787 in Kingston. No other Cornelius Dumond's are found in 1786/1787. There are several indications which link Cornelius of Ontario to the brothers of (the same) Cornelius of New York. (1) In New York there is only one Martinus Dumond, brother of Cornelius (1787). Cornelius had a son Martinus. (2) Adam Dumond is the closest Dumond to Ontario, residing in New York on the 1820 and 1830 census. Also, Cornelius, on the 1871 census, says he is of German descent: his mother's side was German. With what evidence there is now, Cornelius is very likely the son of Petrus P. (Peter) and Maria (Ekkert) Dumond. WIFE-CHILDREN: Arthur Dumond personal knowledge; about 1920; given to daughter, Mrs. May Morrow (correspondence 1997); NOTE: Wife name Mary Sager, children Simon, William, Charles, John, James, Martinus, Peter, Sara, Hannah, and Julia--Just how they are related, Mrs. Morrow is not sure. Married 9 Mar 1841 in Markham, York County, Ontario to Thomas Pearson HODGSON born about 9 Apr 1817 in Carlisle, Cumberland Shire, England, died 1 Jan 1882 in Horning's Mills, Dufferin County, Ontario, buried in Shelburne, Dufferin County, Ontario. ----- NOTES FOR Mary Ann Sarah Margaret (Sarah) DUMOND: QUESTIONABLE LINK: Sarah Margaret Dumond is tentatively placed as the daughter of Cornelius Dumond because of numerous circumstantial associations (deeds, etc., and Cornelius buried next to Hodgson family in Oxford county, also). Mary Dumond Morrow suggests that she could be the niece of Cornelius Dumond. NAME: Known as Sarah or Sarah Margaret STORY-FATHER: Tradition of HODGSON family concerning old grandpa DUMOND (father of Mary Ann Sarah Margaret DUMOND HODGSON); Mary Ann's parents migrated up from Pennsylvania with the thousands that left the United States after the War of 1812; They settled in the Niagara District; She grew up in the Niagara District, and married there in 1841; Old Grandpa DUMMOND lived to be 110, and at the age of 105 walked from Lundy's Lane to Pickering (about 50 miles). STORY-FATHER: Mary HODGSON; as relayed to MRS. May MORROW (my correspondence 1996); Grandpa DUMOND died while visiting relatives in Pickering and supposedly taken home for burial. CONFLICT-DEATH: Family Bible; 3 June 1893, which is incorrect. OBITUARY: The Free Press and Economist (newspaper); Shelburne; 8 Jun 1893; HODGSON -- At her son's residence, Horning's Mills, on Jun 2, 1893, Sarah Margaret HODGSON, relic of late T.P.HODGSON, age 76 years, 1 month and 2 days; Deceased was well known and highly respected, having resided at Horning's Mills for a long time; The funeral took place at Shelburne cemetery last Sunday <4 Jun> morning. DEATH-STORY: Family tradition says she had quite a lingering illness. Some sources have said she had dropsy (excess water excretion). CEMETERY: Shelburne, Dufferin County, Ontario; 1977; Gary J. MORRIS; NOTE: Sarah, beloved wife of Thos. P. HODGSON, d. June 2, 1893, age 76 years, 1 month, 2 days. CONFLICT-BIRTH: 30 April 1817, derived from tombstone age at death; 1 May 1817 is from Family Bible. Since Family Bible is incorrect for death, I presume the date of birth os one day off also. TO-DO: Must ascertain the link between Mary Ann and Cornelius. ----- NOTES FOR Thomas Pearson HODGSON: QUESTIONABLE LINK: Listing as son of John and Sarah (Hewer) HODGSON, is only hypothetical for now. Thomas' wife, Sarah was probably daughter of Cornelius, who lived next to and buried next to John Hodgson, who, no doubt was brother or first cousin of Thomas Pearson. In the same county there is found only one other Hodgson, and that is in the same township, same cemetery: Sarah Hodgson who married Kipp. She is listed as daughter of J. and S. (Hewer) Hodgson. In England there is found a John Hodgson who married Sarah Hewer, no doubt, the parents of Sarah Hodgson Kipp of Oxford County, Ontario. Through this relationship, I have listed John, Sarah, and Thomas as children of John and Sarah (Hewer) HODGSON. Needs to be confirmed. Submitted by George Edgar O'BRIEN 3532 W. Peralta Fresno, CA 93722. George was born 1945/1965 probably in California. Great-great grandson of Louise Dumont and Hiran SCHELL. DEATH: Death notice says died 5 May 1874, 71 years, 9 months. Born in "New Jersey New York Sate". PLACE: There are two towns in New York named Jersey. One in Schuyler County, and one in Steuben County. Dumonts from New Jersey had emigrated there. LINKS: There appears to be some correlation with Samuel Edward with Mathias Dumond/Dumont of Tioga/Tompkins County, New York Dumond family. They came from New Jersey in 1803 and settled there, and were neighbors of who appears to be the father of Cornelius Dumond of Ontario. However, there does not appear to be any relation of the two in the United States (Mathias Dumond's ancestors appear to be quite distinct from our Dumont relatives who settled in New Jersey, even though they lived quite near to them in New Jersey also). Some suggest his middle name was Edward. If so, the only other Edward Dumont is found in the Mathias Dumond family. The only other Samuel Dumont is descended from the New Jersey Dumont family. RELIGION: Methodist. IMMIGRATION: Immigrated to Canada in 1819-1822. Naturalized in 1832. From Ontario Genealogical Society periodical "Families", vol 19, #1, 1980, by Donald A. McKenzie - Naturalization Registers, Nominal Index to RG5,B47, Vol 3 (1831& 1832): Samuel Dumont, filed in 1832, Oxford county, entry # 76. NOTE: This procedure was required in order to ensure that immigrants from the US remained loyal to Canada in any dispute between the 2 nations. Anyone who had been in Canada 7 years, was required to swear an oath of allegiance within 3 years of passage of the act passed by Upper Canada in 1829. This means Samuel probably entered the country in 1819-1822. LAND: Samuel Dumont's farm was in E.Oxford Township. Dec. 31, 1833 - bought 29 acres from Reuben Sherman Thornton, lot 21, conc 4, #2849. In 1834 purchased S part of N 1/2 of lot 21, conc 4 from Calvin Martin and sold it to George Daniel in 1858. Samuel had a Crown Grant in Jan 9, 1852. He purchased 13 acres, lots 21/22 conc.4, township of E. Oxford, from the Crown. Ref # 11185, Des #9169, Quebec. He is described as yeoman. 1852- mortgaged to George Hay - discharged 1858. 1858 - deed of separation Dumont to Walter Tate (|Appy bars her dower right). 1860 - he and wife Appy sold 148 acres lot 21, conc. 4, E. Oxford Township to William Peers for $4000.00, registry office # 23938. He is dead by the time the 1876 Oxford County directory is issued. A man named Thornton lived on the property in 1989. Not yet proven that it is the same family. MILITARY: He was a member of the 1st Regiment of the 1st Oxford Militia 1828-1829 time frame, Captain James Carroll's Co. MARRIAGE: Second marriage to Appy Galloway cannot have been successful as in 1861, Samuel was living with his daughters, Louisa and Mary, and Appy was living in North Oxford. By the 1871 Oxford County census, Samuel was living with Eliza and Heman. Appy did not die until 1884. CENSUS: 1851 ONTARIO, Oxford County, East Oxford Township. Thorton owns the N1/2 of this lost. The Old Stage Road cuts the lot into north and south halves. A lost containing about 25 acres is know as a broken lot 22 and Dumont wishes to have or purchase this.
