Peter married (1) to Susanna _____ born 1704 in Netherlands(?), died 1758 in Somerset County, New Jersey. Peter married (2) to Patience POTTS born about 1720 in New Jersey(?). ----- NOTES FOR Peter (Demun) DEMUND: HISTORY: "Somerset County Historical Quarterly" Vol V, page 19 DEMUN.--Peter de Mun, b. 1699 (or 1700), d. 1783, was in Monmouth co. in 1729, and, in 1745, purchased 200 acres of land in Bedminster township between Lamington and Vliettown. His first wife, Susanna (???), b. 1704, d. in 1758. His second wife was a widow, Patience (Potts) McQuackin, of Bethlehem, Pa. Sons by first wife were Peter, Jr., John, Edward and William (d. young); by second George and William. The Demun family of Bedminster descend from this Peter, and it includes some of the name of Dumont, who mistakenly supposed they descended from Wallerand Dumont, and changed the name from Demun to Dumont some years ago. The first Peter we know to have come over from Europe. NAME: About 1850 or 1860 many of the Demun(d) family believed that they were actually descended from Wallerand Dumont of Ulster County, New York (father of Peter who settled in adjacent township in Somerset County, New Jersey), and decided to change their name "back" to Dumont. ----- NOTES FOR Patience POTTS: MARRIAGE: Married (1) _____ McQuackin. Sept. 9, 1734, and d. Jan. 25, 1778; and (2) John Voorhees (son of Garret and Deborah Voorhees), who was bap. Dec. 2, 1744, and d. 1807. Peter Demun, Jr., lived on a farm between Lesser Cross Roads and Peapack. His will of Jan. 21, 1778, is on record at Trenton. The will of Ann Voorhees, dated 1819, was probat. Mar. 9, 1822 (Som. Wills, Book 19, p. 489). John Voorhees had previously married and had four ch. by his first wife: Roeliff, Deborah, Catherine (wife of a Peter Dumont of the Hillsboro twsp. line), and John. His will of Sept. 12, 1797, probat. Dec. 26, 1807 (Somerset Wills, Book A., p. 158), mentions the children stated below. His executors were his widow and her brother, Matthias Lane, Jr. From a clause in the will to the effect that his grandson, John, should be given "my gun or firelock which is now at Schoharie," it may be inferred that some of the family had gone to the state of New York.
