William a son of Peter and Sarah (Ricketts) Long was born 7 July 1841 in Huntingdon county PA. William went to Iowa with his parents and siblings when he was about 15 years old. At age 20 he enlisted in the Army to fight in the Civil War. He fought with Company F Third Iowa Cavalry. A year later he was discharged for disability because of a serious wound.
William then went to Nebraska living first in Dixon county for several years then finally settling in Valley county Nebraska, in 1872. William became active in politics serving as County Clerk and Probate Judge.
William married Phebe E Burnham on 23 Jul 1877. (Phebe E Burnham was born on 28 May 1856 in Covert, Van Buren County, Michigan, USA and died on 22 Oct 1941 in Ord, Valley County, Nebraska, USA.)
