Version 5/7/99: I am searching for information about August Samuel Friedrich LOHMANN my paternal grandfather, his ancestors and descendants. August was born and baptized in The Evangelish Church in Schonebeck, Germany, in 1837. Parents are listed as being Samuel LOHMANN and Christiana FRIEDRICH. A legal document in my possession dated 1868 and issued in Liepzig also indicates that August was from Schonebeck. It is believed that August may have requested this document for emigration purposes while he was still in Germany. A translator has told me that the wording in the document suggests that August was not present when the document was requested. An 1888 map shows Schonebeck to be just south of Magdeburg, Germany. It is possible that August immigrated to the US in 1872 or 1873 through the port of New York. Volume 30 of Germans to America lists a male August LEHMANN who is: 36 years of age; a merchant; arriving on the Hansa from Bremen and Southhampton in New York on September 27, 1873. The Lehmann description appears to fit August's activities in the US until he died in Dallas, Texas, in 1909. August's eldest daughter Emma Lohmann FRY in the Kansas 1900 Census Index while living in Paris, Linn County, Kansas, states that she was 26 and was born in New York in August 1873, one month before arrival of the Hansa in New York.on October 20, 1873 in Philadelphia, PA, before the Clerk of the Court of Quarter Sessions, August declared his intention to become a citizen. This document lists August's age as being " 32 or thereabouts" On February 9,1888, in Kansas City, Jackson County, MO, August was naturalized. August may have married Emma Marie (Ludvilke?) SCHWECHTEN on [May 25, 1866?], possibly in Germany. Other documents indicate that Emma Marie was born in 1852, confirmed on May 15, 1866 as an adult member of an Evangelish Kirche in Vielbaum, Germany a small village south of Wittenberge and very near to the larger town of Seehausen. The church may be located in Seehausen. Immigration date of Emma Marie SCHWECHTEN to America has not been discovered. It is possible that Emma M. L. and August were married in Germany; however, Emma M.L. was not listed on the 1873 Hansa passenger list with August LEHMANN. A family legal document indicates that a Frederick SCHWECHTEN was in Kansas City, MO in 1890. Other family documents indicate the existence of and"uncle" Otto ( SCHWECHTEN ?) in the Kansas City area in the 1910's. Comment is also made about a Fritz ( SCHWECHTEN ? ) being in Illinois, possibly Chicago, in the 1910's. August and Emma Marie LOHMANN's children were Emma b. 1873; Selma b. 1882; Anna b. 1884; Catharina "Katie" b. 1886 and Wilhelm Heinrich - my father b. 1891, who in later years was aka William Henry Louise Auguste b. 1893. Emma's place of birth is listed as New York. Place of birth of Selma is listed as Kentucky. All of the children except Emma and Selma were baptized in St. Peter's Deutsch Evangeliche Kirche in Kansas City, MO. Emma Marie died in Freestone County, Texas in 1895. August died on January 13, 1909 in Dallas, Texas. August is believed to have been buried in either Freestone County or Limestone County, Texas on a "farm". Other surnames acquired by August and Emma's daughters are: Herman L. FRY, W.T. STRANGE, John W. RODELL, Steve MITCHELL.
