Notes from Jon Blocker 3/17/2008 [RE} ...the "place of birth" for John Brittain. He was never stated to have been born in McMinn. That was a very brief four years for his family after he was probably 28 years old, and 'probably' only three of his children were born there. Note the following find on John W's birth info.....haven't been able to find any other source back-up at this time......... Notes from http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:lF6MI6_BaIgJ:www.rootsweb.com/~tnmcminn/9803mcmn.htm+john+britton+mcminn&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1 WAGON TRAIN MIGRATION ....I notice many surnames that also appear in Greene Co, MO. There was a migration between 1840 and 185? from McMinn Co, TN to Greene Co, MO and also to surrounding counties in MO. The Ozarks Genealogical Society should be helpful for those who are suddenly missing a line in McMinn Co. ..... ....the birth of John W. Britton, in McMinn Co, TN, 11 Feb 1797. gaelmael@aol.com Barbara Gael gaelmael@aol.com Submitted on Fri Mar 27 20:24:24 EST 1998 ------ Originally located the above info from the cached link as noted. However, this link was working on Mar 8, 2008 and accessing the page above: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmcminn/9803mcmn.htm 1830 McMinn County, TN Tax List: John Brittin appeared on a tax list in McMinn County, TN as having owned no property and having owed .31 1/4. He was in Captain Shearman's militia company. Source: Page 91 of McMinn County, TN Trustee's Tax Books for 1829-1832; 1872,1875-1876 (FHL US/CAN Film 830219) 1831 McMinn County, TN Tax List: _______ Brittian appeared on a tax list in McMinn County, TN as having owned no property and having owed .43 3/4. He was in Captain Shearman's militia company. Source: Page 173 of McMinn County, TN Trustee's Tax Books for 1829-1832; 1872,1875-1876 (FHL US/CAN Film 830219) John Britain (Britton/Brittain et all) is not listed in any Deed/Land Records for McMinn County - which corresponds with the Tax Lists showing that he owned no property. Notes from Jonathan David Blocker Brown 1/172007: Nathaniel J. Brittain ....could be the younger brother of John W., and the same Nathaniel in the McMinn County Deed records. Two of his children in this RootsWeb page are clearly listed as born in McMinn County TN. Of course, this is the James Brittain Mary Whitty bunch. Just the fact they are in McMinn during that era makes it very suspect, not to mention that Nathaniel had a George W. Brittain, born 1836 and a son John, born in McMinn. Maybe Nathaniel though his "brother" John W. shouldn't have named his son also George W? Feud ensues. [Note: The current PROPOSED and UNPROVEN link of the John W. to the John, son of James BRITTAIN md Mary WHITTY, makes John W. and Nathaniel J. 1st Cousins] All "male laboring titheables" between certain ages (the age limit varied, but, in general, those required to pay poll tax) resident in the different districts were made to work the roads, or provide substitutes. The Old State Road had been kept in repair by those living within a certain number of miles of it. They were required to work from four to six days a year. To maintain the Old State Road other labor became necessary. http://www.bellcountypubliclibraries.org/crm/ky/knox/decker.html

zzz
Jon':s research was previously published within
http://awt.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bevangenealogy&id=I127372&ti=5538
.....Bevangenealogy cites the following on John's page:
Sources:
    1. Title: Bailey Breton History & Genealogy
        Author: T. H. Bailey
        Publication: Published 1962 - by T. H. Bailey - Kingsport, TN
        Page: page 401-454

.....This compiler [B.GaiL} notes the numerous (too many to count) John BR*N(s) who lived during the lifespan of her ancestor.

.....Jon has reserved the right to find and provide evidence that links this John as the father of George W. BRITAIN.  From this descendant's [my] points of view, there is a valiant research effort going on here that deserves merit separate and above that of the subject of Jon's research, namely John BRITTAIN of Jefferson Co. TN.

zzz
Notes from Jon Blocker 4/6/2008
Subject: John Brittain of Jefferson Co. TN
zzz
.....Other birth listed bef 1793 from John Brittain / Hester Laine family sheet. ALL of the birth dates are perfectly accurate, from a Mitchell family Bible (Penelope Brittain's daughter). It's just a travesty that they did not have John's details. Although we're not absolutely positive that this is our John W. Brittain, this John Brittain of Jefferson is the ONLY John Brittain whose situation, location, and time frame fits ours - who was married again in 1822 two counties away. I believe we have found his family. William, one of Daniel's sons who I have named as John's father, died a pauper and was taken in by Tidence Lane (Esther / Hester's father). This explains why our John had nothing. Something happened to that family, and I'm getting more info from Jeff County about William soon. At this juncture, I believe our John W. Brittain was born in late 1793 or 1794. The parents I've alleged for him, William and Fannie King, were married May 4, 1793. This would still easily work, and provides an explanation why Greene County MO history states George W.'s father John was in the "war of 1812." (he was probably actually in the 1814 Creek War - extension on the 1812 conflict). If John W. were born in even 1797, he just would not have been old enough to serve, unless he lied on his enlistment.
....Esther and daughters - ( her name is spelled "Esther" in all court docs related to their divorce). AND the first three daughters are plainly John's girls, according to a letter from Penelope's daughter from husband William Mitchell. But Mary D. is probably not. ...... .....the Divorce states, John "eloped with a certain Cynthia Day." This happened in 1819, and I've searched EVERYWHERE in East TN for a possible marriage of John and Cynthia to no avail. I think he was just "with her" for a few years. Then when his divorce with Esther was final, he calmed down, dumped Cynthia and found Catherine Henlsey. -------------------- Family Group Sheet- from a Mitchell family Bible (Penelope Brittain's daughter). --- 29 Mar 2008 Husband John BRITTAIN 1 Birth bef 1793 Death Burial Marriage 1814 Jefferson Co, Tennessee2,3 Div. filed Jul 1819 Jefferson Co, Tennessee4 Divorce 16 Jul 1821 Jefferson Co, Tennessee5 Father Mother Wife Esther "Hester" LANE Birth 6 Nov 1793 Bent Creek, Jefferson Co, Tennessee6-10 Census 1830 Jefferson Co, Tennessee11 Census 1840 Jefferson Co, Tennessee12 Census 7 Sep 1850 Jefferson Co, Tennessee13 Census 4 Jul 1860 Warrensburg, Greene Co, Tennessee14 Death aft 1860 (Jefferson or Greene Co), Tennessee Burial Father Tidence LANE II (1763-1841) Mother Mary CUDE (1766-1851) Children 1 F Perlina BRITTAIN Birth abt 1815 Jefferson Co, Tennessee Census 7 Sep 1850 Hawkins Co, Tennessee15 Death Burial Spouse John HAUN (1807- ) Marriage 29 Jul 1830 Jefferson Co, Tennessee16,17 2 F Penelope BRITTAIN Birth abt 1816 Jefferson Co, Tennessee Census 27 Aug 1850 Jefferson Co, Tennessee18 Census 23 Jun 1860 Jefferson Co, Tennessee19 Census 13 Jun 1870 Jefferson Co, Tennessee20 Census 15 Jun 1880 Jefferson Co, Tennessee21 Death aft 1880 Jefferson Co, Tennessee Burial Spouse William M. Notes from Jon Blocker 3/17/208 ......Jefferson / Greene is where I am concentrating the search. All of those counties were severed from NC and granted to the United States in 1784. THEN, they were also part of a failed statehood called "The State Of Franklin." This totally explains why John W. Brittain's origins were mis-stated in Missouri history as being "North Carolina." They were living one day in North Carolina, which for four years was the State of Franklin, and then Tennessee. This is WHY we've had such a hard time tracing records for this fam. I'm on it, and will keep you posted! Lost Records for this era are presently being sought in Jonesboro, Washington County, TN, by the Jefferson County Archives.
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_Franklin The State of Franklin was an autonomous, secessionist United States territory created, not long after the end of the American Revolution , from territory that later was ceded by North Carolina to the federal government. The territory comprising Franklin later became part of the state of Tennessee . Franklin was never officially admitted into the Union of the United States and existed for only four years..... ......As of 1790, the government of the State of Franklin had collapsed entirely and the territory was firmly back under the control of North Carolina. Sevier was elected to the North Carolina legislature to represent the region. Soon thereafter, the state once again ceded the area that would soon become Tennessee to the national government to form the Southwest Territory . John Sevier became Tennessee's first governor , and John Tipton signed the Tennessee Constitution as the representative from Washington County .
from http://www.next1000.com/family/GRUBB/sullivan.tenn.html State of Franklin --Sullivan,Washington, Greene, & Davidson County, Tennessee The State of Franklin was set up in 1784 out of the westerly portion of the colonial state of North Carolina. Shortly after the War of Independence the original colonies were asked to pay for the war efforts and create a country with a sound financial policy. Since the taxing the population was difficult and cash was in short supply North Carolina ceded the western portion of the state to the federal coffers. Before the Congress could accept the offer North Carolina withdrew the offer. The citizens of the region decided that federal rule in the meantime was probably a good idea since North Carolina as a state had given this remote region little support in its fight with the Indians or protection from criminal refugees. They saw other benefits as an independent state in terms of taxation, representation and an understanding attitude toward local problems. Representatives of the North Carolina counties of Sullivan, Washington, Greene, and Davidson accepted the offer of cessation to federal territory. The state of Franklin existed for only four years to finally merge with the new state of Tennessee. ..... .....North Carolina regains control of the region in 1788 by pardoning its leaders. Sevier eventually learns through all these travails, the manners and fallacies of government. He is elected as a Senator in North Carolina. In 1789 North Carolina ceded again the region in the west and Franklin became part of Eastern Tennessee in 1796. John Sevier becomes the first Governor of the new state of Tennessee. ......relatives .....here during all the governmental changes ...show up in documents in all three borderings states due to the changing perimeters.
from http://www.answers.com/topic/state-of-franklin US History Encyclopedia: State of Franklin In 1784 North Carolina ceded its western lands to the United States to avoid the expenses of protecting the western settlements and to protect the investments of land speculators who had acquired large holdings under the state's land acts of 1782?1783. Residents of the eastern part of the ceded region, known as Wataugans, favored the formation of a new state......The chief cause of failure was the opposition of a rival faction led by John Tipton, which contributed materially to North Carolina's success in reestablishing jurisdiction by 1789.

************** Notes from Jon Blocker 3/8/2008 .......located an interesting trail on John W. Brittain in JEFFERSON COUNTY TN. The pedigree you connected for us is probably correct, but I'm not holding my breath. A package is on its way from the Jefferson County Archives - which includes a divorce for John W one year before he married Catherine Hensley ! Jefferson Co was severed out of GREENE County TN, which was a haven for Brittains, and Baileys, including the family that John W's son, George W., married into with Betsy Ann Bailey - but not until after those Baileys migrated to Missouri from there.

My family lore says my ancestor Hester LANE m. John BRITTAIN. She was born about 1795. Hester's daughters have marriage records in Jefferson Co. There is also an 1814 Jefferson Co marriage record for an Easter LAIN & John BRITTAIN. Census records indicate widow Hester BRITTAIN lived in close proximity to Tidence5 LANE families and several other BRITTAINs in Jefferson - now Hamblen - Co., from 1830 to 1850: Are Esther Lane, Easter Lain and my Hester Lane the same person? I would appreciate directional pointers from anyone researching this Tidence LANE or any BRITTAINs of Jefferson/Hamblen Co 1790-1870. 1832 - not able to read through the black smudges across the page for the 'B' section of Captain Shearman's militia company where John's name might be found.
Poll Tax for the Militia System: The system called for an organized militia, which in time of emergency could be mustered into the military service. Counties were divided into districts and militia captains appointed in each district.
And, other notes indicate: "l poll" indicates that the taxpayer was under 50 years of age and was therefore subject to a poll tax.
Notes from Jonathan Davie Blocker Brown 1/17/2007: ...there were four acres cut out of William Brittian's place in McMinn when he sold it to Thompson Blackburn (both said they were "of Bradley County") recorded McMinn 28 Aug 1855. The FOUR acres are for the preservation of "Brittain's Methodist Meeting House." This is in line with Green County History, in which John W.'s son gave account that his Brittains were Methodist. I know that "something" happened between all of these Brittains in McMinn, because John W and Catherine left there like chickens with their heads cut off ... Notes from Jonathan David Blocker Brown 1/17/2007 {RE].....the 1829-32 records [McMinn], I am now CERTAIN that the deeds were very mixed up from about 1819 until 1832 with those of the old Hiwassee Indian territory sale. There was one other Indian area adjacent to Hiwassee in which was Bradley County, where it appears some of the Brittains were still considered to be from, though they had property in McMinn. Therefore, any microfilmed records of Hiwassee or any other Indian Territory annex with the McMinn, Rhea, and Bradley Counties of Tennessee is RIGHT WHERE we should be looking. One Last point .... Buncombe County N.C. is where I believe all of these McMinn Brittains came directly from. I've seen a few DIRECT connections, which also included Greene County TN as migration points.
Notes from Jonathan David Blocker Brown 1/12/2007 [RE] ......John W. Brittain family. His wife, Catherine Hensley, died in 1837. We have not been able to find where she was buried, nor John. ... the McMinn Co TN historical society...has begun to make a list of deeds in the earliest part of that county's history, which includes a number of them that were transfered from Hiwassee Indian Territory (and yet another one) when the Treaty opened up the place for more settlement. John W. and probably his brothers and/or father is there.
*********** Notes from Jonathan David Blocker Brown 1/12/2007 ......our John W. is in McMinn (confirmed in 1883 Green County MO history - only about 44 years after he came here). So it is now clear that, for whatever reason, John W. only happened to be in Washington County for a short time (which is to the northeast across the state from McMinn) - just long enough to marry, or court and marry, Catherine......Since there are no other John Britains and Catherine Hensleys recorded anywhere together, I feel certain that the marriage recording is my wife's ancestors. The Hensleys originated in Washington County VA, and traveled between there and Knox County TN. Washington Co TN is in the middle of that route, and there were numerous Hensleys living in that county, just no Catherine. So I believe she is clearly the daughter of Larkin Hensley ... who was exactly the right age. Catherine did make it to Missouri, but then died in 1837 - probably in childbirth of their last one, or shortly thereafter. Then John drove his family to Bates County MO where they lived for two years. Upon their return to Greene County MO, John died "along the way," and we have not been able to locate his grave in any county yet, nor Catherine's (although some think she might be buried in Polk County MO somewhere near Bolivar). We haven't been able to find a deed anywhere in MO on John W., but, since he lived in McMinn TN, nobody that I know of had checked for a property conveyance in 1836 or thereabouts. There may be none. But one thing is for certain, his son George Washington Brittain states in 1870 and 1900 that HE SAID his father was "from Tennessee." Just bear in mind that McMinn was carved out of from North Carolina lands ceded by the Cherokees in the Hiwassee Purchase (Feb 1819). So it may be that John W.'s actual father may have a record as being from North Carolina. I've attached a map of the Overhill District, shows the NC - TN border, and includes McMinn County within.
************** Note: The descendants of Parks Brittain, son of Nathaniel Brittain, son of James Brittain md Mary Whitty do not seem to be found in Bates, Missouri until abt. 1861 - 20 years after John W. Britain moved there and died returning to Greene, Missouri from Bates, Missouri in 1840. Descendants of Levi Brittain, son of Nathaniel Brittain, son of James Brittain md Mary Whitty are found in Pulaski, Missouri in 1850

The following is a Direct Quote:

Joseph W. McDannel, trustee, was born in Greeneville, Greene County, January 10, 1855, the son of Blackstone and Louisa (Britton) Mc Dannel, the former born in Knoxville, January 15, 1811, the son of John McDannel, of Pennsylvania, born in 1787, Marcus McDannel was the next ancestor.

John came to Tennessee in the early part of 1808 and settled in Knox County, and on the 12th of July, 1809, married Sarah Whitson. He served in the Creek Indian war, in Capt. Rufus Morgan's company and Capt. Brown's regiment, and returned to Knoxville in 1814 and died January 31, 1837. Blackstone, like his father, was a mechanic, reared in Knoxville, and resident of Greeneville, after 1829.

He was first assistant of Maj. Samuel Milligan, a commissary in the Mexican war, and afterward engaged in the pension and claim agency of the wars of 1812 and 1846. President Lincoln appointed him United States marshal for East Tennessee, both terms, and he was re-appointed by President Johnson, but, on account of the health of his family, be resigned, and engaged in his old agency business at Greeneville. He had become intimately acquainted with Andrew Johnson when both were working at their trades, and they frequently engaged in public debate on the Indian and other questions, and this was the beginning of the latter's career. The mother was born near Greeneville December 27, 1821, the daughter of James Britton, and granddaughter of Daniel Britton. She was married March 23, 1854, and died in Greeneville April 8, 1876.

Our subject [Joseph W. McDannel] was educated at what is now Grant Memorial University, Athens, [McMinn Co.] Tenn. In 1878 he became deputy register of Greene County, and then became deputy clerk and master, deputy trustee and deputy county court clerk, holding all the positions at the same time. In 1886 he was elected as a Republican to his present office. He is a Mason and an Odd Fellow, and is steward in the Methodist Episcopal Church.

August 6, 1872, he married Emma C., a daughter of William G. Horton Sr., clerk and master of McMinn County. He was born August 22, 1855, in the latter county. Two of their five children are living.

Fair Use?
zzz
Fair Use Copyright for Library Materials means that although the whole pages were scanned and linked here, one's own research must contain only a 'portion' of the page, and that portion must contain some reference to the original copyright holder.  To that end, I have made labels for placing on the portions which we want to use for a ‘show and tell’ (of this genealogy/family history).  Eventually, this page will have on it only those portions pertaining to my direct ancestors, so you will want to grab a copy of each whole page for your own research.  While I only do direct ancestors, these pages most likely contain information about collateral lines, which I enjoy reading on other's websites, hence, the whole reference pages here.  Thank you for your patience with me.

Page design?
cresources
Of the four versions of pseudo-frameset by B.GaiL, this is a variation on the second.
While looking for a way to plant something on a page, I designed a "frameset-not."
...The first version does not have enough room for a full-table, but is fine for left-nav pages.
...The second version put the nav as scrollable, but a separate ssi.
...The third version has nav at the bottom.
...To the third, I just added some borders, making it the fourth.
