Clarifying Marquis and Marcus BR*N

from

BR*N Spelling of surname (Sos) Interchangeable

There are three; one in each generation.  All with various spellings of Marquis.  The following is intended to clear-up confusion between them.

George W BRITAIN, b.1827 TN McMinn Co., was the son of John BRITTEN
(which is the spelling on John’s marriage record).
John also had a brother, Marquis Lafayette,
a son Marquis Lafayette (known as Lafayette),
and a grandson, Marquis Lafayette Fletcher (Mark, my Grtgf).

George W BRITAIN took in two children, in 1863, after his brother, Marquis, died: 1863-marquis-lafayette-probate-mo-greene.jpg

RES:  MO, Greene County Archives, 1992.

The uncle of George W, Marquis Lafayette BRITTAIN, as John BRITTEN’s brother, did not travel to TN McMinn Co., but rather returned to Cherokee, NC, married, raised a family, lived for a time in MO (or perhaps just visited), returned to Cherokee, and died there.  His information is in and among the records for Cherokee census.  When I locate it, again, I'll post it here.

The above Marquis is the one snagged and put under BRITTAIN (on image).

Please let me know if I've taken a wrong turn or two or so,
and thanks for taking the time to compare your records.

Sincerely,
B.GaiL
