John Benton Fassett

Major John Fassett, son of Josiah and Abigail (Stevens) Fassett, was bornin Windham county, Connecticut, September 16, 1794, and died atScottsville, Pennsylvania, May 2, 1886. John Fassett was the leadingbusiness man of the community during his long and active life. Hismilitary title of major was given him by commission from the authoritiesfor service in the state militia. For twenty years he was justice of thepeace. He was very prosperous, and it was said that at different times hehad owned two-thirds of the land in Windham township. At the time of hisdeath he was by far the wealthiest man in the county. He established orhad established by the government the first postoffice at Scottsville,and was the first postmaster, changing the name from Hemlock Bottom toScottsville, after his friend, Judge Scott, of Wilkes-Barre. With hissons he opened in 1853 a store in Scottsville, built the first steam sawmill in that region in 1856. From that date Fassett & Sons became largedealers in lumber and in merchandise. Later they established the firstgeneral store in Jenningsville, Pennsylvania. They erected a cider mill,the first and only one for many years thereafter. They bought and soldcattle and horses, supplying the farmers with teams, tools and supplies,taking their products in exchange. He was like his father a Free Mason, acharter member of Franklin Lodge, now at Laceyville, and a strictPresbyterian. Besides his office of justice of the peace and postmaster,Major Fassett held at different times nearly all the town offices. Goodroads was one of his hobbies, and he was supervisor of highways for manyyears. He married Sally Haverly, and they were the parents of eight sonsand daughters; Charles, married Mary Prentiss; George S., married MaryVose; John Jr.; Alvah, see forward; Caroline, married Dr. John Denison;Lucia M.; Ann, married Joseph T. Jennings.
