are direct ancestors of L Robinson
Hatfield, Mr. (b. ABT 1764)
Note: NOTE: There is considerable confusion as to who Thomas Hatfield's (b 1791 DE) parents are. Part of the problem is that Thomas and wife Elizabeth moved to Washington Twp, Allen, IN with no other Hatfields. So far the best we can do is follow a process of elimination for the many available Thomas Hatfields.
- Disproved: s/o Thomas Hatfield and Sarah Allen. This Thomas was b 8 Jan 1803 possibly in Montgomery Co., OH, and d ~1830, married Philena Harris. There is much data on this Thomas who appears to have stayed in Montgomery Co., OH. Also, sources such as [A Sense of Place in Centerville and Washington Township, (Montgomery Co., OH), by The Centerville Historical Society, pub. 1977 & 1985 by Landfall Press, Inc., Dayton, Ohio], and a Genealogical Index of
Miami Valley pioneers, Ohio, pages 67 and 68, make this seem unlikely. Thomas Hatfield Sr. and
Sarah Allen had 10 children, Thomas Jr. being born Jan. 8, 1803. They also had 2 grandsons named Thomas as mentioned in his will.
- Disproved: s/o Jonas Hatfield & Rachel Janey. Thomas b 1787, d 1854 in Green's Fork, Wayne, IN, m Sarah Brown. Jonas was a pioneer of Green's Fork, IN. Jonas and Rachel has eight children, dates not listed, named Thomas, Jonas, John, Nathan, Deborah, Rachel, Mary, and Ann.
+ Undetermined but not likely: s/o Levin Hatfield and Sarah Davis. The above source, p 124, includes a Levin Hatfield (came from New Jersey about 1807) and his wife Sara Davis, who have a son named Thomas. "After Levin Hatfield died in 1825, his wife, Sarah, and son, Thomas Hatfield, apparently converted the sawmill to a grist mill. A tannery also was sunk on the property before it was sold in 1836 to John Belleman." Our Thomas left Montgomery Co., OH for Allen Co., IN by 1824 or 1825. How does this fit with the grist mill?
+ Undetermined but possible: s/o William Hatfield and Elizabeth Price.
The minutes of the First Baptist Church in Centerville, Montgomery, OH, 1799-1950, film 1686034,
may shed some light on our Thomas. At least 3 Thomas Hatfields are received into this congregation, though there may be more as the film is sometimes difficult to impossible to read. The 3 known Thomas are: 1802 rec'd Thomas Hatfield and wife Sarah {Allen} by letter, 3 Aug 1816 rec'd Thomas Hatfield by experience, Nov 1819 rec'd John Allin and Thomas Hatfield by experience. Thomas's father-in-law, Benjamin Archer, is prominent in this church, so it's likely he was in the same congregation, especially since Thomas moved with Benjamin Archer's family to IN after Benjamin and his wife were excluded from the church Jan & Mar 1824.
Before this happened, on 3 Nov 1820 began an interesting hearing concerning a dispute between Jonathan Hatfield and John Bowin, his guardian. It would appear Mr. Bowen (or Bowin) had promised Jonathan a horse, bridle, sadle, etc. if he would share work with him until he came of age (21, I think). Mr. Bowin reneged on his promise, and challenged Jonathan to take leave of him or take the law into his own hands (this parts fuzzy). Mr. Bowen was also known to "whip the children". Owen Hatfield, who came from Delaware frequently inquired about the children (an uncle?)
We learn that William Hatfield died in 1807: Early Settlers of Montgomery County, OH, vol. 2, p 221 - Common Pleas (Probate) Docked Book D-1, case 442 - 1807. And that William Hatfield, 20 yrs & Benjamin Hatfield, 16 yrs, minor heirs of William Hattield, deceased, chose John Bowen as guardian. Sec: John Hatfield, p 257. Sister Mary chose Jonathan Hatfield as her guardian. No mention is made here of the Jonathan Hatfield, who according to the church minutes, also has John Bowin as a guardian.
Note that in Feb 1810, William's widow, Elizabeth Price, married John Bowen.
Feb 1821, John Bowin is excluded from the church based on his behavior towards Jonathan. A dispute arises from which Thomas Hatfield (spouse Sarah Allen), is also excluded, as he didn't agree with the John Bowen ruling. A couple of years later, the church completely falls apart, with members asking to be excluded in droves. Now this is important: during this time, Oct 1823, Thomas Hatfield s/o William is asked to visit Thomas Hatfield s/o Levin to see why he hasn't been attending. The next month Thomas Hatfield s/o Levin is excluded.
It's probable the Thomas s/o Levin is the same one discussed above under "Undetermined but not likely". But to which William does the Thomas s/o William belong? Is this our Thomas? Is the William the one who died in 1807? No guardianship was mentioned for Jonathan in the above noted court case, so is it possible Thomas was also not mentioned?
Further research is required to learn more of these families, and determine to which our Thomas Hatfield belongs.

Note: NOTE: William Hatfield, b 1702 in Haversfordwest, Pembroke, Cardiganshire, Wales, m Mary White (relative of William White) abt 1725. Came to Delaware to the Welsh Baptist Tract area abt 1732.
Children: William Jr, possibly sons John, Thomas and Samuel. Info from Carol Hatfield White, Nov 2000.
Per Carol Hatfield White, the first Hatfield's in this line, came to America as religious rebels. They settled in and around the land donated for a Welsh Baptist Settlement by William Penn in about 1680-90. The first place they lived was called Johnny Cake Landing and later became known as Fredricka. All had addresses in the 1800 census such as "Cow Marsh, Black Swamp Forest, Murderkill 100" or Little Creek Millspillion 100, Duck Creek, etc. He appears to possibly been either a brother or father to Thomas, Samuel, John as well, as their names are intricately woven together in wills and estates.
William Hatfield 1702, Haversfordwest, Penbroke, Cardiganshire Wales md Mary, relative to Wm White 1705, according to christening records; Children William, Levi and Elizabeth for sure and possibly Thomas, Samuel and John as well as the history of Montgomery Co. 1887 OH lists Nancy d/o Levi of Wm line as marrying John son of Thomas "a distant cousin".
Note: Mary is a relative of William White
Note: Accroding to Carol Hatfield White: It seems likely that Wheatly Hatfield whose name is listed in the French and Indian War records of 1759 is a son of the first Wm and a brother to William 1733. Whitely is listed as age 18 in 1759 making him b 1741 and not to be confused with Wm 1733 son.

Lydia (Hatfield) Colvin bore thirteen children and died in 1865, probably in Tipton Co., IN. "The earliest records of Boswell Colvin concern his service in the War of 1812. He served as a private in Capt John McKee's Company of the fourth Regiment of Kentucky Militia commanded by L.t Col. Robert Poague. He volunteered 27 Aug 1812 in Augusta, Bracken Co., KY, and was discharged on 17 Mar 1813 at Fort Amanda near Mays Lick, Mason Co, KY. His second tour from 10 Sep 1814 to 10 Mar 1815 was as a substitute in Capt. James Ellis' Company of the 16 Regiment of Kentucky Militia (detached) under Lt. Col. Andrew Porter. During this time he also worked as a stone mason in Capt. John Spencer's Company of spies. He was discharged at Fort Malden in Canada near Detroit. "Soon after returning home he settled in Washington Twp., Montgomery Co., OH, where in 15 Oct 1817 married Lydia Hatfield...In 1832 Boswell and Lydia followerd her father into Indiana. They settled on Owen Hatfield's land in Washington Twp., Rush Co. When Owen died in 1836, they inherited this 80 acres. They remained in Rush Co., for over twenty years. In Feb 1841 they sold twenty acres to Lydia's brother-in-law Jonathan Kelsey. In Aug 1849 and Oct 1854 they sold a total of 37.5 acres to Owen Hatfield, Lydia's youngest brother. [there's more...]
