NOTES from Myers:
John and Frances married in St. Mary Magdelene's Parish, Taunton. They were in Mass. in 1629 per Plymouth Colony Records. John was Sheriff of the Colony.
They were at Dorchester, 1633-40; church member, 1635; freeman; proprietor, 1636; planter; constable. He was at Scituate, 1640-54; among holdings was 108 acres near mouth of North River on the Marshfield side; constable and sheriff. He was at Lancaster, 1654-62; pioneer settler and held largest "estate" of land. (NEGHR 111:173)
" The Remingtons of Utah," by Ward Roylance (privately published, 1960): JOHN WHITCOMB of Lancaster, John was born in (Dorsetshire?) England about 1588, a son possibly of John Whitcomb of London and his wife Anne, daughter of John Harper of the East India Company. He was married in Taun- ton, Somerset, on 26 November 1623, to FRANCES COGGAN, daughter of Henry.
Apparently well-educated, John is supposed to have settled in Dor- chester, Mass. by 1633; but this seems unusual, since his daughter Joan was baptized in Taunton, England in 1634. (It may be that his wife followed him to New England by a year or two,) John removed to Scituate by 1640, where he had 108 acres, There he remained for some 12 or 14 years, during which he held the position of constable and became a freeman in 1652. Also in 1652 he became interested in the new plantation of Lancaster, but it is probable that he did not actually settle there until 1654, when he conveyed the last of his land in Scituate. John is regarded as one of the founders of Lancaster even though he was not one of the very first to take up actual residence there.
John Whitcomb was involved in some rather humorous litigation in 1657 and 1658 with his neighbor, Stephen Gates. It seems that three of his sons (including Josiah and Job) had accidentally or purposely killed some swine belonging to Gates; and in the belief that it was the honorable thing to do John had given Gates his note promising payment. The next year, however, in December of 1658, "being weak and aged," John petitioned the General Court to excuse him from making payment--stating that Gates had misrepresented the affair, or words to that effect. But the Court adjudged that he must honor his note, inasmuch as he had made it.
the following information is found in "The Whitcomb Family", by published
John appeared in Dorchester as early as 1633
John became a church member in 1635 "Christian"
John's youngest son, Josiah, was born in 1638
John was shown to have been well-to-do for the times, a man ofintelligence and enterprise much given to buying and selling land.
In 1640 he removed to Scituate where he owned land, one piece being afarm of 108 acres near the mouth of the North river on the Marshfield side
became one of the "Conihasset" Partners in 1646.
John was made constable of Scituate during his residence there.
There is a reference to John Whetcombe being a "Freeman" in the Recordsof Plymouth Colony where the entry is, under date June 3, 1652, "Freemanadmitted to this court and sworn, "John Whetcombe and John Willis."
1644 - he sold his farm on North River to one Thomas Hicks and anotherdisposal of land in Scituate was in 1654, when he conveyed 1/2 his sharein the Conihasset lands to John Williams, Jr., giving the other 1/2 tohis son Robert.
1654 - Removed to Lancaster. Not all his children accompanied him toLancaster. John Whitcomb and his son John Jr. have been named as amongthe founders of the town of Lancaster. John was one of the pioneersettlers in the Nashaway Plantation which afterward became Lancaster, according to Mr. Nourse's Early Records.
John Sr's lot was one of the largest in Lancaster.
Apr 2, 1658, John Whetcombe agreed to pay for three swine killed andspiled by his three sonnes to his neighbor, Steven Gates.
Up to 1662, John's tillage in Lancaster were corn, tobacco and flax withroots and garden herbs and vegetables. Also had an orchard (prob formaple sugar).
John lived in Lancaster eight years. He "met the inevitable hour," Sept24, 1662 at about age seventy four. He was laid with other forefathersof the hamlet in "the old burying ground," but no stone can be foundtoday.
