NAME: Dawn Card writes: The marriage entry spells her last name "Gusenberry". Her brother at some point changed the spelling of the family name to Crisenberry. Other members of the family used the spelling Cusenberry or Cushenberry.

p 9, "Benjamin Archer chose to move his family and his children's families to Washington Township in Allen County, Indiana in 1824. Why he left Ohio we do not know, although there is some evidence that he and his son David failed to meet their financial obligations, they were subject to court lawsuits".

"The name of Archer is one which appears in the earliest annals of Washington township. David Archer, father of the subject of this memoir, was a native of Montgomery County, Ohio. In that country he acquired his education, grew to manhood, and married Anna Chrisenbury, a native of Kentucky. He was a farmer, and man of great industry; but his labors returned him an insufficient remuneration, and he turned his attention toward the State of Indiana in the hopes of improving his portion by buying land and starting anew. Land in Allen County was then worth from $1 to $3 per acre ; and he took advantage of its cheapness to enter a large tract. In December, 1825, he made all the preparations for his journey hither, and started for his newly purchased home. Two wagons contained his earthly possessions, including his family. After a journey of three weeks, he reached Fort Wayne, where he left his family, going alone to the forest for the purpose of constructing a cabin, into which he moved immediately after its completion. He cleared and improved a large farm and, in addiction, was extensively engaged in the manufacture of brick. From the proceeds of his labor he discharged the indebtedness against him in Ohio, and as years rolled on, accumulated a very comfortable fortune.
"He was a man of strong mental and physical abilities; and though his education was deficient, he was a power in the community and every one felt confidence in his keen judgment. He was constantly suggesting new measures for the advancement of community interests. Chiefly through his instrumentality, Washington Township was organized.
"He was a member of the M. E. Church and the Masonic Fraternity; and his daily life was of a high moral standard. He was elected County Commissioner in 1814, serving 4 years in that capacity. He died in August 1861. Of his family of eight children, five are now living."

p 29, "Northeast Corner, Lot No. 1 of the Aaron Nutt Plat on the northeast corner of Main and Franklin Streets was once the location of the "sign or the Crossed Keys", a tavern that was equally as renowned in those early years as Dayton's Newcom Tavern, which has been preserved and moved into Carillon Park in Dayton. The "Sign of the Crossed Keys" was run by John Archer, a New Jersey native who bought the lot on which it stood from Aaron Nutt.
"Archer constructed a log building on the lot in 1802, and continued to operate the business for some twenty years. In 1815, he became to town's first Postmaster, and this service he also handled in his tavern...
An article in the Bellbrook Moon declares that many famous persons visited the tavern, including "the exiled son of Louis Phillip, King of France, the Prince of Joinville and suit who graced the tavern with their presence." Also General William Henry Harrison (later became President of the USA) stopped at the tavern with his troops when he marched through during the War of 1812.
"Apparently village and township political bodies conducted buisness at Archer's, whcih continued its family operation when John, Jr. assumed its proprietorship. References in Washington Township Trustees' minutes record that officials frequently met in 1822 'at John Archer, Jr.'s'...".

Royce, Maria Louisa (b. 22 May 1823, d. 25 Apr 1914)

OBITUARY: Fort Wayne News, 27 Apr 1914, Ancestry.com;
Mrs. Maria Notestine aged ninety years, eleven months and three days, died at her home in St. Joe township at 2:45 o'clock Saturday afternoon after a prolonged illness, due to the infirmities of old age. She had lived on the farm where she died for the past seventy-four years.
Mrs. Notestine was born in New York and came to this city together with her parents at the age of twelve years. The trip was made by the way of Lake Erie and from Toledo to Fort Wayne on the Maumee River, as this was before the canal was built.
She was united in marriage to Uriah Notestine on Nov. 12, 1840, and immediately following her marriage they moved to the old homestead in St. Joe township, where she had resided until her death.
Surviving relatives include the following children: James, of St. Joe township; A.S., of Lawrence, Kas.; Mrs. Amos Wodner, of St. Joe township; Mrs. Thomas C. McComb, of Big Rapids, Mich. Two grandsons, four granddaughters and one great-grandson also survive. The deceased was a member of the Mayhen Chapel Church of the U.B. denomination and had been a member for the past fifty years.
Funeral Services will be held fro the Mayhen U.B. Church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock (sun time), Rev. Mr. Phillips officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Masters, pastor of the church.
