BIOGRAPHY: A Sense of Place in Centerville and Washington Township, (Montgomery Co., OH), by The Centerville Historical Society, pub. 1977 & 1985 by Landfall Press, Inc., Dayton, Ohio;
p 190-191, The John Hatfield House. John Hatfield, son of Thomas and Sarah Hatfield. Born in 1762, Thomas Hatfield was originally from Delaware. After the Revolutionary War he met Sarah Allen of Culpepper, Virginia. John, their first son was born in 1793. Thomas and Sarah Hatfield entered Montgomery Co. prior to 1801.
"When John Hatfield was eighteen years old he enlisted with Perry's Rangers rather than be drafted in the War of 1812. [His father enlisted in the same company.] Both father and son returned home a year later.
"John had married Nancy Hatfield (a distant relatvie) in 1817, and they had their first of six children in the spring of 1818.
"John Hatfield, a stone mason, died in the first half of 1829 at the age of 36. He left his wife with five children under eleven years of age (one child, Ambrose, had died earlier). Thomas, the oldest son and heir to the homestead was only an eight year-old child..." (there's more on the family).

BIOGRAPHY: The History of Montgomery County, Ohio; 1882; 977.172 H2h pt.2; Washington Township p 265; included in the biography of his son, Thomas Hatfield; includes:
"When John was eighteen years of age, he was drafted to serve in the war of 1812, but having imbibed his father's spirit of liberty and freedom he could not brok the idea of going into his country's service as a drafted man, and therefore inlisted in Capt. Perry's Rangers. His father, fired with that spirit of hatred against the same old foe he had helped to humiliate in 1776, enlisted in the same company and did excellent service as scout and guide, and being of a fearless nature was ever the first man to ford any stream that lay in their pathway. After serving one year, he and his son were honorably discharged at Vincennes, Ind. John was married about 1817 to Nancy Hatfield, a distant relative, who bore him six children, viz. : Ann L. (the wofe of William Dodds), Lydia C. (the wife of Daniel Crosley), Thomas, Allen, Ambrose B. (deceased) and Maria (the wife of John C. Martin). JohnHatfield was a stone-mason by trade, but after the war of 1812 turned his attention chiefly to farming. He died May 11, 1829, and his wife survived him untilAugust, 1852. They were members of the Baptist Church and highly respected by all who knew them, he being a hard-working, generous and kind-hearted man, who was always careful to be right before acting."

Smead, Charles Grant (b. Aug 1871, d. 28 Dec 1944)
Note: CENSUS:
1880 Census; Washington, Allen, Indiana, June 1880;
Source: FHL Film 1254264 National Archives Film T9-0264 Page 262A
NOTE about this census by Brian Smead: This census page can be very confusing for a number of reasons. One, it has two sons living with John M. Smead, Thomas H. Smead and John H. Smead. John H. Smead appears to be in another household at first BUT the relationship column has him as son, and then has his family listed below him. I believe that John H. Smead and his family lived with his parents before getting his own farm in Cedar Creek township. The other confusing part is the entries of Charles G. and Henry H. Smead as grandsons listed just below Thomas H. Smead as son. For many years, because of this I thought Thomas H. Smead as my GG grandfather but both of Charles G. Smeads marriage certificates and his death certificate says his father was Edward C. Smead. Thomas H. Smead became a widower in 1875 and died in 1888. I don't believe he had any children. I have been through every page of the Allen county census, page by page, and find no entry of Edward Smead, his wife or other children however he died in 1887, three months before his 6th son was born, in Adams Township, Allen county, near the town of New Haven
