BIOGRAPHY:
Occupation: Ran away from home at 14, at age 17 owned 40 acres in what is now the heart of Spokane, WA where he also bought horses and broke them, furniture store in San Pedro, house movers, resturant owner, candy store, etc., Real Estate and Investments (as noted on death certificate).
Occupational notes from Grand-daughter, Jean, 22 Jan 1979: He left home when he was about 11 years old and claimed he learned to read off railroad box cars. He traded horses with Indians, had a candy store, furniture store in San Pedro, a house moving business, started restaurants and then sold them -- (had one of the first after the San Francisco fire), tried raising potatoes near Idaho Falls, Idaho, also invested in real estate. He did many things during his life, but didn't stick to any one for long.
Notes from grand daughter Pat - The family was probably Catholic. John Yochem's father died when he was 10. John Mathias had no schooling. He left home at 11 or 14, as he felt he bore the bulk of responsibility for the family, even though he wasn't the oldest brother. At age 17 John had 40 acres in Spokan, WA. It was during this time that he bought horses from the Indians. He would buy horses to break, then sell them. One time he was captured by the Indians when his horses looked liked some that had been stolen from them, but they released him when the horses wouldn't respond to Indian commands. He had a candy store in Salt Lake City, Utah, which he considered his only failure, which he pulled out of due to feuding between the Mormon and non-Mormon employees. Furniture stores may have been a specialty; he had one at the time Orville was born, he had one in Red Mountain, Randsburg, CA, a small mining town. He was a land speculator in Coos Bay, OR, and elsewhere. He was an entrepuer who opened new business, then sold out. Upon hearing about the San Fransisco earthquake, he took a load of wagon supplies and sold it out. He was in the Yukon, Canada, during the gold rush. He did business on a hand shake, and considered himself a good judge of character, and would lend money on a handshake He was a carpenter at one time. Orville tells of a camping trip vacation his family went on to Klamath Falls, OR, when he was 10 (abt 1904). Orville walked the entire distance along side the family wagon. When they arrived, John wanted to go fishing, so he built a rowboat. Around 1931 he received a Walnut Grove in El Monte, CA in payment of a loan. They stayed in a little apartment with no electricty, over the irrigation pumps. The roars of lions could be heard from a nearby lion farm. Orville recalls living in 21 to 25 places in Los Angeles alone while growing up. John couldn't stand to live in a house for more than six months and would move, even if it was just across the street. He had many fascinating stories to tell of his varied adventures. In his later years, he had Parkinson's. Pat remembers comments that the Yochem's spoke high German, and the Gimpel's low German.

Notes from ggdaughter Marianne:
A family story is that he was the first one to open up a restaurant in San Francisco immediately after the earthquake (1906), and sold it at a profit when a 2nd resturant opened. He had a premonition that something had happened to his father. At that exact time, his father was accidentally killed while chopping wood, when his ax came off its handle striking him in the chest. (1870 Michigan City, La Porte, Indiana.)
Note from Pat: At age ten, John had a vision (not a premoniton). When returning home he learned it was true.
In Pat V's version, Mathias was killed while working in a basement, where an object, hurled through the air, struck and killed him. They traveled extesnively overseas and abroad.
One time while he and Eliza were visiting his sister Mary on Hawaii, he sudenly had the urge to leave immediately, and wanted to take the next boat off the island. Eliza convinced him to wait till the next day when a boat was leaving for the states.
They enjoyed camping at O'dell Lake, OR.
Notes from ggdaughter Lisa:
Grandpa Yochem, told that his father, John Mathias, held a great many different kinds of jobs. He started working at a very young age. When applying for a job, he always told the employers he had the desired experience (even if he did not), and he usually got the job. He was smart, and picked up quickly on how to do the new job, so no one ever caught on.
Also recalls the ax story.

His death was due to kidney and stomach troubles, with which he had been afflicted for over a year. He had been confined to his home about four months, and of late it was realized that he could not recover.

For the past twenty-five years or more he had resided on a small farm near Roeskeville and in addition to tilling his land had been employed by Roeske Bros. for a good many years. A year or so ago Mr. Gimple and Theodore Roeske drew a $15,000 prize in the Louisiana lottery since which time the old gentleman had been taking life more easily. He also drew $1,000 last summer and by his good luck and a long life of toil leaves his family in good circumstances. Mr. Gimple served in the late war, but was not a member of the G.A.R.
He was married January 14, 1865, to Miss Mary Meese, who together with three children survives him. The children are William Gimple, a farmer living near the city; Mrs. John Yochem, of Los Angeles, Cal., and Walter Gimple, who lives at home.

WILL:
German document translated by Helga Price. Deals with an inheritance from (for) Gottfried Gimpel. The lawyer Jwan Schellenberg of Altenburg wrote a letter to Marie Gimpel of Michigan City. Apparently Marie had sent him papers to show she's the wife, who the kids are, etc. The lawyer wrote back that what she sent isn't all they needed, but despite it, the government will let her have her inheritance, being sent through the mail. The translator had difficulty knowing how the widow Justine Starke (married name) Gimpel (maiden name) fit in. Another translator thinks the $check is coming from Justine. Perhaps Justine is a sister to John, since Gimpel is her maiden name? There's 500 marks involved (about $400), for Mary and her children, and the lawyer itemizes expenses, which reduces the 500 marks to 453 marks plus 59 pennies. The lawyer says he's also sending a form which needs to be signed by her and her children, indicating they received the money. The form also has to be signed by the guardian of the children (a widow with children is required to have a male guardian for her children.) The lawyer's from Drescha, Altenburg, <Germany?>
