Mathias Jochim

Mathias was born in 1820, it is believed in the Rhine Valley of Germany. We do not know who his parents were.
At some point he left his home and attended a Catholic Seminary in Switzerland, then later immigrated to the
United States and settled in Michigan City, Indiana. By 1855, age 35, he was married to Helena Rosenbach,
with whom he had 8 children before being killed in an accident in 1870 at the age of 50. Mathias is buried
in the Calvary Cemetery (part of the Greenwood Cemetery) in Michigan City, LaPorte, Indiana.

The name Yochem has over a hundred variant spellings. At some point Mathias's family
changed its surname from Jochem, Jochim, Jochiam, Jochum, Yucom, etc. to Yochem.
