John was born April 19, 1860 in Michigan City, Indiana, the third of eight children born the German immigrants
Mathias Jochim and Helena Maria Rosenbach. John's father died when he was 10 years old, and he left home
at the tender age of 14. By age 17 he owned 40 acres of land in the heart of Spokane, Washington, where he also
bought, broke and sold horses. One time he was captured by the Indians when his horses looked liked some of
theirs that had been stolen, but they released John when the horses would not respond to Indian commands.

John owned a great many kinds of businesses, such as furniture stores, a candy store, restaurants, etc., and John
was also a successful land speculator and real estate dealer.
He couldn't stand to stay put, and would move to a new house every 6 months, even if it was just across the street.
John with his wife Eliza and their only child, Orville. Eliza and John were
married on Oct. 24, 1893 in Michigan City, LaPorte, Indiana, when John was 33 years old, and Eliza 25. |
