There are problems in indexing early Welsh names, because of the later adoption of surnames and their variable use. This applies to Monmouthshire, even though it was one of the more anglicised Welsh counties. Names that specifically include 'ap' ; (also 'ab'; 'son of') or 'ferch' (also 'verch', 'vergh', 'vch', 'vz', 'ach' or 'ych'; 'daughter of') are indexed as if the father's name is a surname; with other names it is assumed that they are written with forename(s) preceding surname.
