Great Pool Hall
|
1619: This is when the house appears to have been built; this date with the letters I. P., for John Powell, is punched on the knocker of the back door, as well as cast in a leaden hopper under the roof, and in the hall it is in large figures in the plaster ceiling. |

| John Powell, the builder of Pool Hall was an
uncle of Thomas Powell, who appears in Blome's List of Gentry, 1673. He
was the father of William Powell. His son, James, had a daughter Ann,
who died without issue, c. 1787, and left the estate to the family of
a cousin, Rachel Turton. She, or her son Zouch Turton, sold Pool Hall
towards the end of the eighteenth century to Richard Lee of Clytha. It
passed to his daughter Mary, wife of John Jones. With the Great
House in Llangattock Lingoed and other property it was settled on
Mr. Jones' daughters as their marriage portions. The property was sold
about the year 1840 to Colonel Vaughan of Courtfield, who left it to his
younger son Reginald Vaughan. Colonel Vaughan resided at Pool Hall from
1847 to 1851. William Powell's brother-in-law, John Tate, lived at Pool Hall until his and William's deaths in 1718, when the estate and manor were let to Samuel Watkins. His eldest son, James, moved on marriage to Wern-y-cwm, but the younger brother, John, is described in his will (1780) as 'of Pool Hall'. |
