First Generation


1. John Finley. Born in 1739. John died on 12 Aug 1790, he was 51. Buried in McClaughry Family Cemetary.

On 21 Nov 1766 when John was 27, he married Elizabeth McClaughry, daughter of Patrick McClaughry (ca 1708-1787). John and Elizabeth settled on the Hume patent in Little Britain, Ulster County, NY on a road later known as the Rough Ridge. The land became the property of their son James who in turn, left it to his sons James and Samuel. Samuel's farm, smaller of the two was sold to Pat Murphy (the last tavern keeper at Rock Tavern) whose heirs sold it. James farm was left to his son James, who sold it to Mr. Dusenbury, who sold to Ian Deane, who owned it until the MTA takeover in 1971.

Ulster County NY Probate Records, Volume II, Letters of Administration JOHN FINLEY, late of New Windsor, yeoman, deceased intestate 24 Nov 1789 - Administration granted to Elisabeth Finley, the widow. Admin. bond œ750 by the widow, James McClaughry Junr. of Montgomery, merchant and John Sly of New Windsor, farmer. Witnessed by Samuel Finley and Joseph Gasherie. Inventory taken 27 Aug 1789 by John Nicholson and James McClaughry.

John was a member of the 2nd Regiment Ulster County Militia

ii. Mary. Born in 1770. Mary died on 2 Feb 1824, she was 54 and is buried in the McClaughry Family Cemetery in Little Britain, NY.
iii. Elizabeth.
iv. Samuel. Born in 1773. Samuel died on 15 Feb 1827, he was 54 and is buried in the McClaughry Family Cemetery in Little Britain, NY. Samuel married Mary McCarty, daughter of Neil McCarty & Mary Burnet (1742-1831). Born in 1787. Mary died on 9 Mar 1847, she was 60.
v. Margaret. Born in 1780. Margaret died on 28 Feb 1853, she was 73 and is buried in Goodwill Presbytarian Cemetary. Margaret married Dr. Charles Fowler, in Newburgh, NY.

Family of John Finley (1) & Elizabeth McClaughry

2. Captain John Finley. Born in 1772. John died on 9 Mar 1839, he was 67. He is buried in Little Britain Cemetery, Little Britain, NY.

John married Jane Burnet, daughter of Robert Reid Burnet (1762-14 Nov 1854) & Rachel DeWitt (2 Nov 1762-4 Apr 1830). Born in 1789. Jane died on 25 Oct 1857, she was 68.

They had the following children:

ii. James.
iii. John.
iv. Samuel Alexander. Born in 1820. Samuel Alexander died on 3 Jan 1833, he was 13. Buried in Little Britain Cemetary, Little Britain, NY.
v. Mary Elizabeth (1822-1869)

3. James Finley. Born in June 1772. James died in 1848, he was 75. Buried in Covenanter Church Cemetery.

James married Elizabeth Boyd. Born in 1789. Elizabeth died on 31 Aug 1838, she was 49.

They had the following children:

i. Samuel (1816-1879)
ii. Elizabeth McClaughry. Born on 4 Jul 1818. Elizabeth McClaughry died on 7 Aug 1900, she was 82. Buried in Covenanter Church. Elizabeth McClaughry married Rev. J.W. Shaw. Born in 1812. Rev. J.W. died in 1888, he was 76.

Family of Captain John Finley & Jane Burnet

4. Robert Finley. Born on 29 Dec 1815. Robert died on 30 Jul 1873, he was 57. Buried in Little Britain Cemetery, Little Britain, NY. In 1848 when Robert was 32, he first married Mary Ann Drury, daughter of Dr. John W. Drury (21 Oct 1791-8 Oct 1847) & Jemima Parshall (1806-21 Oct 1895). Born in 1825. Mary Ann died on 3 May 1863, she was 38.

Purchased farm on Drury Lane from the wife and daughter of Moses Parshall in 1859. At that time it was a farm of 104 acres.

They had the following children:

i. Robert E. (1858-1940)
ii. Moses DeWitt Burnett (1851-1925)
iii. LoAnna Frances. Born in 1852. LoAnna Frances died on 16 Nov 1907, she was 55. Buried in Little Britain Cemetery, Little Britain, NY.
iv. Eura E.. Born in 1855. Eura E. died in 1931, she was 76.

Robert second married Margaret Scott, daughter of John R. Scott & Anna K.. Born in 1824. Margaret died in 1901, she was 77.

5. Mary Elizabeth Finley. Born in 1822. Mary Elizabeth died on 30 Sep 1869, she was 47. Buried in Little Britain Cemetary, Little Britain, NY.

Mary Elizabeth married Erasmus Darion Drury, son of Dr. John W. Drury (21 Oct 1791-8 Oct 1847) & Jemima Parshall (1806-21 Oct 1895). Born in 1823. Erasmus Darion died on 25 Dec 1872, he was 49.

They had the following children:

ii. Charles. Born in 1849. Charles died on 12 Mar 1878, he was 29. Buried in Little Britain Cemetery, Little Britain, NY.
iii. John. Born in 1851. John died on 16 Jul 1907, he was 56. Buried in Little Britain Cemetery, Little Britain, NY.
iv. George. Born in 1858. George died in 1929, he was 71.
v. Frank. Born in 1862. Frank died in 1937, he was 75. Frank first married Ella Morrison. Frank second married Jennie Hill.

6. Samuel Finley. Born in 1816. Samuel died on 26 Oct 1879, he was 63. Buried in Little Britain Cemetery, Little Britain, NY.

In 1844 when Samuel was 28, he married Elizabeth Brown. Born in 1821. Elizabeth died in 1884, she was 63.

They had the following children:

i. Agnes S.. Agnes S. married A.C. Burnet.
ii. Margaret. Margaret married M.J. Bull.
iii. Helen. Helen married A.E. Morrison.

7. James B. Finley. Born on 22 Jul 1822. James B. died on 9 Aug 1883, he was 61. Buried in Berea Cemetery.

James B. married Elizabeth McCartney, daughter of James McCartney & Mary Shaw. Born on 23 Sep 1828. Elizabeth died on 20 May 1894, she was 65.

They had the following children:

i. Mary Elizabeth (1854-1915)
ii. Georgeanna. Born in 1856. Georgeanna died in 1915, she was 59.
iii. James (1860-1930)
iv. Howard. Born in 1862. Howard died in 1940, he was 78.

8. Robert E. Finley. Born on 22 May 1858 in Little Britain, NY. Robert E. died in Little Britain, NY on 24 May 1940, he was 82. Buried in Little Britain, NY. Robert E. married Julia Marion Sears, daughter of Harvey Sears (4 Jan 1844-6 Feb 1924) & Susan McDougall (10 Dec 1848-23 Apr 1922). Born on 3 Oct 1874. Julia Marion died in Little Britain, NY on 23 Apr 1899, she was 24.

They had the following children:

i. Robert Sears (1892-1977)
ii. Ralph. Ralph married Minnie.

9. Moses DeWitt Burnett Finley. Born in 1851. Moses DeWitt Burnett died in 1925, he was 74. Moses DeWitt Burnett married Emma Louise Bull. Born in 1858. Emma Louise died in 1929, she was 71.

They had the following children:

i. DeWitt Tarehill. Born in 1888. DeWitt Tarehill died in 1941, he was 53. DeWitt Tarehill married Helen Vrooman.
ii. Edith Moffat. Born in 1894. Edith Moffat died in 1895, she was 1.
iii. Mabel Melissa. Born in 1896.
iv. Homer Scott (1893-1951)

10. LaMaria D. Drury. Born in 1846. LaMaria D. died on 11 Mar 1896, she was 50. Buried in Little Britain Cemetery, Little Britain, NY. LaMaria D. married William Morrison.

They had one child:

i. Georgeanna F.. Born on 4 Jan 1890. Georgeanna F. died on 13 Aug 1922, she was 32.

11. Mary Elizabeth Finley. Born in 1854. Mary Elizabeth died in 1915, she was 61. Mary Elizabeth married Thomas Harris.

12. James Finley. Born in 1860. James died in 1930, he was 70. James married Emma Baxter. Born in 1871. Emma died in 1901, she was 30.

Family of Robert E. Finley & Julia Marion Sears

13. Robert Sears Finley. Born on 18 Aug 1892 in Little Britain, NY. Robert Sears died in Arden Hill Hospital, Goshen, NY on 8 Aug 1977, he was 84. Buried on 11 Aug 1977 in Little Britain Cemetery, Little Britain, NY. Robert was a member of Little Britain Grange for 67 years. He enlisted Militia Town of New Windsor 6/22/1916.

Robert bred and showed champion Fox Hounds and was a member of the Orange County Fox Hunters Association. He was an active member of the Temple Hill Association and was the chief carpenter during the restoration of Temple Hill in New Windsor, NY.

On 25 Mar 1914 when Robert Sears was 21, he married Dorothy Opal Titus, daughter of Epenetus Titus (17 Oct 1862-4 Jun 1925) & Phoebe Maria Suydam (3 May 1862-30 Oct 1940), in The Hermitage, Town of Newburgh. Born on 16 Feb 1896 in Queens, Nassau, NY. Dorothy Opal died in Washingtonville, NY on 24 Oct 1986, she was 90.

They had the following children:

i. Robert Asahel (1916-1972)

Family of Moses DeWitt Burnett Finley & Emma Louise Bull

14. Homer Scott Finley. Born in 1893. Homer Scott died in 1951, he was 58. Homer Scott married Gladys Hadfield.
