A group of young historians from Felton Grammar School shared top honors at the annual Junior Historians convention in Buffalo Saturday. Two of their exhibits received red ribbons, and three exhibitors received cash awards. The group also won two subscriptions to well-known history magazines for the pool library.
David Britt, representing Felton and the North Tonawanda school system in a team quiz competition, garnered 15 of the blue team's winning 42 points with his knowledge of Niagara Frontier history. One of the magazine awards to the school was his prize.
A model of Old Fort Niagara constructed by Craig Brozek, Steve Litwin and Dennis Smith, received a top ribbon and cash award. Made of paper mache, paperboard and toothpicks, it was based on the early sketches of the explorer Pouchet.
A second red ribbon went to the illustrated historical research paper, "The Tonawandas, Then and Now." This entry was also awarded a magazine subscription.
Earlier, the group drew applause from the audience, which packed the auditorium of the Buffalo Historical Building as it presented a laugh-filled review of fashions from 1800 to 1920.
Models for this portion were Gary Behrns, Chris Angle, Kristine Behrns, Martha Forkel, Lynette Gosch, Donna Kecskes, Mary Kelley, Margie Miner, Sally Schoenfeldt, Nancy Spoonley and Patty Swain. Donna Snyder was narrator and Terry Burgess introduced the participants.
Before the fashion show began, the models were kept busy by photographers who posed them before the society's display of early Niagara Frontier living and working quarters.
Working behind the scenes for the fashion show were Vicki Swisher, chairman and director of the group; Debby Bull and Carla Durkee, in charge of wardrobes; Paul Donner, property and sceneryman, and Alvin Schwartz who handled the sound system. The young people are members of Class 7 - 7 and were advised in the exhibits and performances by Frank Sheppard and James Wightman, Felton teachers.
More than 20 junior high schools from Erie and Niagara Counties were represented.
