Nine generations of Littlers!

Robert McCandless Littler (my great great grandfather)
Born: about 1829 near Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia
Died: January 24, 1897 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois
Buried: Oakdale Cemetery in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa
Parents: His father was Charles Williams Littler, son of Elijah Littler and his wife Margaret Williams, who was born about 1794 in Frederick County, Virginia. Elijah was the son of Samuel Littler and his wife Margaret Dragoo, who was the son of John Littler and his wife Mary Ross, who was the son of Samuel Littler and his wife Rachel Minshall (Taylor). Robert's mother is still unknown.

UPDATE 3/23/2001: I think I may have found the mother of Robert M. Littler. There is a record of a marriage between a Charles W. Littler and a Hester Thornburgh in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland on December 17, 1822. Baltimore was only about 90 miles from Winchester so this is a good possibility. I have sent for the records in hopes of finding out more information.

She died on July 9, 1873 at the Littler family home on Jersey Ridge outside of Davenport, Scott County, Iowa. She is buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Davenport. Also listed in the 1860 Federal census for Scott County, Iowa are Martha's two sons from her first marriage to Sylvester Larned Langdon. She and Sylvester were married September 1, 1851 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. The children of that marriage were:

William Dexter Langdon born in Michigan on July 29, 1852 and

I would like to express a thank you to the late Carlos Hidalgo and his niece Joan Fletcher as well as Charles Robert Littler III as the source of some of the photographs used on this site. And a second thank you to Carlos for the reprocessing in Adobe Photoshop of the three tintypes of the Robert McCandless Littler family group. Carlo was researching the Manuel Palacios family of Chile.

A *BIG* thank you to Jeanette Billeter for scanning and retouching the old and damaged photograph of Irene Bayer Littler and daughters and the one of Robert Elsworth Littler. We love you, Jenny!!!

Here is a photo of a Carrie Littler that was sent to me by Robert C. Sollars (a *BIG* thank you, Bob). It was taken in Potomac, Vermilion County, Illinois in 1907. It was part of a larger picture showing the rural route mail carriers. It would appear that Carrie was a postal clerk in the Potomac Post Office at that time. I do have a Carrie Littler in my database. She was the daughter of J. C. Littler (Joel C. Littler, son of Lewis Littler, son of Abraham Littler, son of Thomas Littler, son of Joshua Littler and Deborah Oldham) but I do not know if this is the same Carrie. Anyone know this Littler family member?
