According to the History of Hardwick, Massachusetts with a genealogical register by Lucius R. Paige; re-printed Bowie, MD by Heritage Books, 1994; originally published Boston by Houghton, Mifflin, 1883, p335:

"Bates, David, a Baptist clergyman, resided near Gilbertsville at the place marked "Mr. May" on the R. map, preached statedly at Dana, was very corpulent and d. of apoplexy on 20 May 1813 a52. He had no children. His wife, Prudence, d. at Windsor, Conn, 1840 at a78."
