| Following the implementation of the Treaty of Paris (
1763) there was no longer a mighty French presence in this region of North
America. The grounds for apprehension by the Acadian that there might be
a French reconquest had dissappeared and parties of Acadians from time
to time were becoming British subjects and taking the oath to King George
111.The document which is presented here bears the marks, rather than the
signatures, of
22 fisherman who were active in the Magdalen Islands in 1765. |

| The document begins:
"We the Persons whose Names are Wrote underneath, Natives of Nova Scotia, on the Cow Fishery in the Magdalen Islands, so sincerly and Severally Promise We Will be Faithfull and bear true Allegiance to his Majesty King George". Then follow the names and marks of the men Beneath these is Written, "Sworn before me this 31st Day of August 1765 at Harbour Amhurst in the Magdalines, Gulp of Saint Lawrence." I present the list of names spelled and offer a modern verson of the surnames where it seemed useful to do so; |
