An Acadian Oath of Allegiance of 1765
Following the implementation of the Treaty of Paris ( 1763) there was no longer a mighty French presence in this region of North America. The grounds for apprehension by the Acadian that there might be a French reconquest had dissappeared and parties of Acadians from time to time were becoming British subjects and taking the oath to King George 111.The document which is presented here bears the marks, rather than the signatures, of
22 fisherman who were active in the Magdalen Islands in 1765.
-
The document begins:
"We the Persons whose Names are Wrote underneath, Natives of Nova Scotia, on the Cow Fishery in  the Magdalen Islands, so  sincerly and Severally Promise We Will be Faithfull and bear true Allegiance to his Majesty King George"
Then follow the names  and  marks of the men  Beneath  these is Written,
"Sworn before me  this 31st Day of August  1765 at Harbour Amhurst in the Magdalines, Gulp of Saint Lawrence."
I present the list of names spelled and offer a modern verson of the surnames where it seemed useful to do so;
