I am the son of Leo Edward Martell of Petit de Grat, Nova Scotia, Canada and Annie Cecilia Bourque of D'Escousse, Nova Scotia, Canada. Leo was the son of William Guillaume Martell a fishing schooner Captain in Petit de Grat who married Rose Anne Martel (Samson Martel), his third cousin.

My brother, Arthur Joseph Martell, my sister, Carol Anne Martell, and I were born in Waltham and Newton, Massachusetts. My brother died at 42 years of age as a result of a heart attack. My sister went on to becomea Registered Nurse and married David Rowe of Stowe, Vermont and they now live in Saunderstown, Rhode Island.

I attended St. Jean L'Evangeliste Catholic School in Newton, Massachusetts
(a bilingual, French and English grammar school) until grade 8, and then completed my primary school at Newton High School.

I enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955 for an 8 (eight) year tour of duty.  I served in the 433rd Fighter Interceptor Squadron (F-89- D and J) and finished my tour in 1963 as an inactive reserve.  After completion of my Air Force duty, I attended Northeastern University as a co-op student completing my education in 1968.

I married Jane Marie DeWolfe, daughter of Wallace DeWolfe of the Arichat DeWolfes and Catherine Considine. We were married for 31 years when Jane was diagnosed with Colon Cancer in 1991.  She died in 1993.

We have four children: Gary Arthur Martell, Lynne Carol (Traina) Martell, Thomas Edward Martell and Robert Edward Martell Jr.  They are all  married and I now have 9 (nine) grandchildren ranging in age from twelve to three years of age.

In 1995 I met and married Barbara K. Grooms, daughter of Floyd Grooms and Lucille Alston of Phoenix Arizona. The Grooms family has been  interested in genealogy for years and the reason for my interest in  researching my family tree.  I began with a small tree sent to me by  Steven White and got hooked immediately.  We now have a file of more than 9000 names.

I am now retired after a 30+ year career as senior sales and marketing executive with Shugart Associates; Seagate Technology, serving as  their President for European, Middle East and Africa Operations and  later of all International Operations.  After Seagate I served as President and CEO of three Silicon Valley storage technology corporations until my retirement in 2001.

I have vicariously been an Olympic Athlete, a Nuclear Scientist, a Rocket Scientist, a Soldier of Fortune, a Secret Agent, a Singer and  Dancer, a Teller of Tall Tales and an all around good guy as well as an amateur Genealogist!

Barbara and I keep busy travelling in our new 38 foot diesel pusher motorhome around the United States and Canada.
