Alick Hodgson was born in Fitzroy,
Victoria on the 31st. March,1873. No mystery about that, I have
his Birth Certificate, he was the sixth child of Alexander and Aseneath
Hodgson. His son, Selwyn, knows nothing about his father's childhood in
Fitzroy, indeed, had no contact with any of Alick's family. While searching
the Victorian Records for any clues to the family, I came across a marriage
of Alick Hodgson to Charlotte Mary Sposito on the 26th January 1903. Alick
was aged 29 years and Charlotte, being under 21, had had her mother's permission
to marry.Charlotte's parents were Emma and Bapiste Sposito, a fisherman
of Hastings, Victoria. On his marriage Certificate, Alick gave his occupation
as "labourer".
We now come to the unanswered questions.
Alick married Violet Priscilla Jones in Brisbane on the 28th March 1914,
giving his age as 28 years, his occupation as "engine driver" and his status
as "bachelor". What happened to his first wife ,Charlotte,in
the period between 1903 and 1914? Why was he 29 at the time of his first
marriage and 28 at his second marriage? What happened in those eleven years
between marriages? How long did his marriage to Charlotte last? Did Charlotte
divorce him or was his marriage annulled? There is no record of any birth
to Charlotte and Alick. When did Alick come to Queensland? we know that
he lived in a boarding house run by Violet's mother, but the length of
his stay we do not know.
If Alick was asked about his family
in Melbourne he would say " you wouldn't want to know them". There is no
evidence that he was in contact with them ever. Why did he sever all connections
with his parents and brothers and sisters? We are sure that Violet had
no knowledge of his first marriage.
Recently through the G.R.D. I found
a second cousin, twice removed, who unfortunately could not give us any
answers to these questions. Also through G.R.D. a Mr. Mouchamore of South
Australia got in touch with me. Charlotte Hodgson, nee Sposito, remarried
in 1913 to a Percival Ellington Mouchamore and a son Percival Christopher
Mouchamore was born in 1913. Charlotte died at Fairfield Victoria in 1962.
What an intriguing, frustrating
business this family research is!!
