Our History

These pages are dedicated to our Parents, William and Lillian Beatrice Roberts (nee Lisle) and Alick and Violet Hodgson (nee Jones) without whom none of this would have been possible.
---oOo---

OurAustralian story began in the 19th century with immigrants from the British Isles. Hugh Roberts was the first to arrive, on the "Ascendant" in 1853 at the Moreton Bay Settlement of New South Wales, he married a lass from Glasgow, Scotland, Isabella Riddell, who had arrived with her parents on the "Genghis Khan" in 1854. They are my Great Grandparents. Hugh became a selector in the Glasshouse Mountain District of Queensland, the old Moreton Bay Settlement having become the State of Queensland in 1859. Their son Robert married Sarah Bowen who had arrived with her parents on the "Winifred" in 1875. They are my father's parents.
My mother's father, Henry Lisle, is proving very illusive. The family story is that he deserted ship and married my grandmother, Jessie McConachie, in 1891. Her parents came from Aberdeen, Scotland and arrived in Brisbane, between 1862 and 1864.
Selwyn's paternal Grandparents, Alexander Hodgson and Aseneath Edwards, both arrived with their parents on the same ship, the "Hotspur" in 1857. They married and settled in Fitzroy, Victoria. His father, Alick, was their sixth child.
His maternal Grandparents, Richard and Martha "Christmas" Jones (nee Morgan), arrived from Wales with five children, on the "SS Bulimba" in 1887 and after a short time in the New Guinea Estate at Toowong, went to live in South Brisbane.
All the aforementioned people are officially listed as "Pioneers" in their respective States.

While researching our family history, I have come across some stories and mysteries that I would like to share with you, Why is there eleven years missing from Alick's life?, discovering Selwyn's second cousin, twice removed, the World War 1 experiences of our uncles, one of whom won a Military Medal for bravery, check the list of Kinsfolk names, you may belong and you may have a story to tell, if so mail me at iamlorrie@qldnet.com.au.com.au
