The family name of KILBURN or KILBOURN comes from the Town of Kilburn in the north riding of Yorkshire, England. The KILBOURN family seems to have originated there in the late 1300's, then moved to Cambridgeshire. On April 15, 1635, THOMAS and FRANCES (MOODY) KILBOURN, and their children, Margaret, Lydia, Mary, Frances, and John (also known as Sergeant John), left from London, England for New England on the ship "Increase". They settled in Wethersfield, Connecticut. The KILBOURNS remained in the vicinity of Wethersfield and Litchfield, Connecticut until 1786, when JOSEPH and ELIZABETH (MARSH) KILBOURN, and their children, Susannah, Timothy, Elizabeth, and Aaron, moved to Pennsylvania. Joseph and his family became involved in the conflict between the settlers under the Connecticut claim and the government of Pennsylvania. As a result of this conflict, they were forced to leave Pennsylvania in 1789, and moved to Niagara County, New York. In 1795, the family moved to Delaware, Middlesex County, Canada West (now part of the province of Ontario). The KILBOURN family continued living in Delaware, and nearby Westminster, until the 1860's, when BENJAMIN KILBOURN and several of his children, including TIMOTHY KILBOURN (Lisa's great-great-grandfather) moved to St. Clair County, Michigan, which is in the "thumb" area of the state. The Kilbourns have primarily lived in Michigan ever since. Anyway, below is a brief synopsis of my KILBOURN ancestry. If you'd like more detail, I'd be happy to share .... just zap me an e-mail message. |
