Frederick Joseph Salem
5 March 1927 - 9 August 2001
Frederick Joseph Salem was born in New Bern, NC. The name his parents gave him was Freddy.
He changed it to Frederick and when he was confirmed he chose the middle name of Joseph
because his brother Jimmy chose that name. He was the son of George & Nazera Salem and the youngest child
of four: Yvonne, George, Jimmy & Freddy.
In 1946 he joined the United States Navy.
While living in Washington DC he met and married Pat Van Horne. They shortly moved to Salina, KS where Pat was from.
He had friends that were barbers and he thought that barbers made a lot of money because
his friends always had money in their pockets. He went to barber school and later found out that his
friends had money because they were always asking for an advance from their employers. But he
did make a good living being as a barber. In 1953 when he received his license he worked at a barber
shop at Shilling Air Force Base in Salina, KS. In 1955 he bought his shop at Kraft Manor Shopping Center
known as "Kraft Manor Barber Shop". He owned the shop until 1992, but continued to work there part time.
He had one disadvantage of his barber shop being located where it was. His daughters had to walk by
it to and from school. After school if his daughters had a "need" for candy they would go into the shop and
ask for a nickel. He couldn't say no with a shop full of men.
How many children can say they saw their father almost everyday at work, even if they just walked by
and received a wave from their "daddy" with scissors in hand?
His favorite knicknames for his daughters were: knuckel head, bird brains, and knot heads.
He must have liked head since he was a barber and fond of our knicknames.
He had a way about him that is indescribable. So many of his customers admired him and he was the
barber of more then one generation of some families in Salina and when we celebrated his life on August
11, 2001 we found out how well admired he was with his customers.

He loved money, no matter what form it came in. Brianna had to keep an eye
on her winnings in case Grandpa tried to "sneak" some for himself.
He was a man of few words, but his love was always felt. He took wonderful care of his family and he will ALWAYS be alive in our hearts for the rest of our lives.
