Came from New Jersey, then lived between Tennessee and North Carolina. Moved out west to mine gold.

Samuel Clawson, In 1854 crossed plains and settled in Monterey then to Siskiyou county Cali. Last few years on his farm in Henley, survivor of Modoc war and was acquainted with/ Captain Jack. He had a mine in Siskiyou Co. CA. He named it Annie Mine after his wife. Samuel also owned a bar in Hornbrook, where he made and sold Clawson shot glasses, of which there are still some amongst the family.

Although the family name was changed by my GG grandfather to Gilcrist for belief that he should not contain "Christ" in is own name, we are descendants of George Wm. Gilchrist who came from Kettins, Scotland in Angus in the early 1800's to settle in Rockbridge Virginia with his wife Janet McLagan and children. George Died sometime before 1830, burial place unknown. The children married and most went west or stayed in West Virginia where they had relocated too in 1830. My GGG Grandfather George H. Gilchrist, moved with his wife Julia Neel, of the Neels of Monroe Co. West Virginia, to Ohio where they had a son Leonard Gilchrist, George moved the wagon trains west from here and I do know here he died or what year, he was last seen in the 1850 Ohio. Census. Leonard and his mother moved west to Minnesota where he married Jesse Hollis. Son George W. Gilchrist married Martha Woolley.
